Description

,1. F. HEMENWAY. AUWMATFC PHESSURE RELEASE FOR CLOTHES WRlNGERS.
' APPucAno'wmED SEPT'. 9, me. L25Q1? 1;
Patelitd Dec. 18, 1917 I JOHN F. HEMENWAY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
AUTOMATIC PRESSURE-RELEASE FOB CLOTHES-WRINGERS.
Specification of Letters Patent. I Patcntxed D80. 18, 1917.
Application filed September 9, 1916. Serial No. 119,177.
I '0 allwkom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN F. HEMENWAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Auto matic Pressure-Releases for Clothes-wringers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to theaccompanying drawing.
This invention relates to automatic pressure release for-clothes wringers, the object being to provide a clothes wringer with a pressure releasing devicewhich will operate automatically in case of a foreign object being drawn between the pressure rolls so as to instantaneously release the pressure thereon. Another object of my invention is to provide an automatic pressure release which is exceedingly simple and cheap in construction and one which can be readily applied to the ordinary form of clothes wringer now in use. a
Another object of my invention is to provide a pressure release in which a pivoted latch is employed for holding the movably mounted top bar carrying the pressure screws in predetermined position within'the frame, said latch being released by the upward movement to the upper pressure roll.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a clothes wringer partly in section showing the application of my improved construction of automatic pressure release thereto;
Fig. 2 is an end view of the same;
Fig. 3 is a top plan view; and Fig. at is a detail perspective view of the supporting plate and pivoted latch.
Like numerals of reference refer to like parts in the several figures of the drawing.
In the drawing, 1 indicates the frame of an ordinary construction of clothes wringer which is provided with the usual slotted side bars 2 in which are mounted bearings 3 and 4 carrying shafts 5' and 6, provided with pressure rolls 7 and 8 which are preferably provided with meshing gears inelosed by gear casings ,9. Mounted on the top of the bearings is a pressure barlO which is pref stably to the gear casings 9, and
when the bearings are moved upwardly, the gear casings will be raised at the same time so as to allow free movement of theupper pressure roll.
Slidably niounted within the slotted portions of the'side bars 2 of the wringer frame, is a bar 11 which carries a bowed pressure spring 12, the ends of which'engage the ends of the pressure bar 10 over the bearings 4, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. Slidably mounted within the upper portion of the side bars of the wringer frame is a top bar 13 which is slidahly connected to the bar 11 by screws 14 which work in bores 15 formed in the bar 11 as clearly shown in Fig. 1 in order to allow the top bar to move independent of the bar ll'for the purpose hereinafter fully described.
The top bar 13 is provided with threaded boxes 16 at each end in which are mounted pressure screws 17, the lower ends of which engage bearings 18 secured in the top of the bar 11 as clearly shown in Fig. 1 so -that when the pressure screws are adjusted, the pressure rolls will 'be placed under the proper tension in order to wring the clothes as they pass between the same.
Secured over the upper end of each of the side bars is a plate 19 which is provided with offset apertured cars 20 at its lower end which extend into the slot of the side bar and between which is pivotally mounted the offset apertured eye 21 of pivoted latch 22 adapted to exten t over the upper edge of the plate and en 'a'ge a wear plate 23 secured to the top of the top bar in order to hold the top bar in predetermined position within the wringer frame so that the pressure screws can be adjusted in order to exert the desired pressure upon the pressure rolls.
Arranged over each end of the upper pressure roll carrying shaft 6 is a cap 24 so constructed that the shaft is free to rotate therein, said cap having a vertically disposed channel stem 25, the web of which is cut away and the upper ends enlarged and rounded to form cam portions 26 adapted to cooperate with cam lips 27 formed on the sides of the pivoted latch 22 so that when the upper pressure roll is moved a predetermined distance, the pivoted latches will be drawn outwardly out of the path of the top bar so as to allow the top bar to move vertically to release the'pressure on the pressure rolls. The upper portion of the stem 25 is mounted in. guidelugs 28 formed on the 1 have shown the stem of the stern below the cutout portion so that plate 19 as clearl'i siovvn in the pivoted latches are normally held in the path-oi travel of the top bar so as held the same in its proper position within the Wring'er frame so that the pressure screws carried thereby can be adjusted so as to just the pressure means in the construction of inger. herein shovvn to which have applied my improved construction of automatic pressure release, show pressure means in the form of a bowed spring, but it is, of course, understood that the ordinary form of? coil springs could be used, and 1 do not Wish to limit myself to any particular construction oi clothes Wrihger, as my invention is capable of being applied to any form of clothes vvringer in. which a movably mounted top bar is cur ployed carrying; pressure screws for adjnsh his the pressure means.
lin the construction of pivoted latch and the releasing member herein shown carried by the upper pressure roll carrying shaft, l bifurcated at its upper end to receive the pivoted latch which WOZlQS between the fur-cations thereof and is provided with cam lips arranged in the path of travel of the camehapcd ends of the stem so that when the stems move vertically, the
latches will be moved laterally out of path of the top bar.
In the operation of the pressure release herein shown and described, assuming thet the clothes vringer is shown in F. 1, Q and 8, with the latches in engagement with the top bar, a foreign object or the operators hand is accidentally drawn between the pressure rolls, the upper pressure roll is moved vertically beyond the ordinary distance it travels in allowing clothes to pass between the pressure rolls, and the .stemiof the caps are carried upwardly such a distance that the cam faces thereof are brought into engagement with the cam lips of the pivoted latches so as to force the latches laterally out of the path of travel of the movably mounted top bar which instantaneously rel ases the pressure means by allovvingthe top bar to move vertically.
