PRESSURE-RELEASE son CLotrims WRINGrEts To all 't0/1,0m t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN F. HEMENWAY, a citizen ofthe United States, residing` at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pressure Releases for Clothes IVringers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a combined automatic and manual pressure release for clothes wringers, the object being to provide a release which is so constructed that the same can be readily installed on the ordinary construction of clothes wringers now in use.
Another object of my invention is to provide a pressure release in which the automatic releasing bars are disposed on theinside of the frame above the shaft of the upper pressure roll in such a manner that they are operated by the upward movement so as to release the pressure retaining means on the abnormal separation of the rolls.
Another object of my invention is to provide a clothes wringer having pivoted latches for holding the pressure'means in predetermined position7 said latches having a connection with the manually operated means and the automatically operated means in order to allow the latches to be moved in position to release the pressure means by the manually operated means in case the automaticl means fails to operate.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a clothes wringer partly in section showingthe application of my improved construction of pressure release thereto;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a portion of the pressure releasing mechanism detached; and
Fig. 3 is a detail elevation partly in section.
LikeJ numerals of reference refer to like parts in the several figures of the dra-wing.
In carrying out my invention I employ a clothes wringer of the ordinary construction having the usual side bars 1 connected together by cross bars 2, the side bars being preferably formed slotted, in the upper ends specification of Letters Patent APatented Nov. 18, 1919.
Application Vfiled May 9, 1917. Serial No. 167,493.
of which are slidably mounted a top bar 3 providedl with threaded boxes l carrying pressure screws 5.
Mounted in the lower portions of the slotted side bars 1 of the wringer frame are bearings carrying` pressure roll shafts 6 and 7, provided with pressure rolls 6', 7 the bearing of the upper pressure roll being provided with spring supports on which are mounted coil pressure springs 8 which are engaged by bearing plates 9 carried by a pressure bar 10. The bearing plates 9 are adapted to be engaged by the pressure screws for adjusting the tension on the pressure rolls.
Secured to the side bars 1 of the wringer frame are slotted plates 11, provided with bearings 12 in which are pivotallv mounted latches 13 adapted to be seated within recesses 11 formed in the ends of the top bar 3 so as to hold said top bar in predetermined position within the wringer frame in order to allow the pressure screws to be adjusted for adjusting the pressure means. The latches 13 are provided with laterally eX- tendin slotted arms 15 which extend through the slots formed in the plates 11 and through which the pressure screws 5 pass as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
In order to provide means for moving the latches outwardly out of engagement with the top bar to release the pressure means automatically, I provide a pair of releasing bars 1G`which are slidably mounted on screws 17 Vcarried by the side bars 1 of the wringer frame and are provided with forked upper ends 18 which are slidably connected to the arms 15 as shown at 19, saidv releasing bars being adjusted in respect to the shaft 7 of the upper pressure rolls 7 so that the bars will be raised by the passage of an abnormal thickness of goods through the pressure rolls. .as the bars 16 are raised the latches 13 are swung outwardly on their pivots so as to release the top bar, the movement of which is limited by the arms 15 working in-the slots of the plates 11. As the top bar moves upwardly the pressure on the pressure rolls is released, andy it will be seen that by this construction when an abnormal thickness of goods orthe operators fingers are drawn between the pressure rolls, the pressure is instantaneously released.
The top bar of the frame is provided with a centrally disposed bore in which is slidably mounted the shank 20, of a push button 21 which carries stud pins 22 at its lower end on which are slidably mounted the slotted arms 23 of forked levers 2e which are pivotally mounted in brackets 25 so that when the push button is forced downwardly, the levers 24 will be rocked on their pivots. The shank of the push button is surrounded b y a coil spring 26 for returning the same to normal position after it has been depressed.
The free ends of the levers 24k are slidably connected to the free ends oic the arms 15, oic the latches 13, so that when the levers are rocked on their pivots by the downward movement o'l the push button, the latches will be `thrown outwardly out of contact with the top bar to release the pressure means. ln the construction herein shown I show the connection between the pivoted levers 2a and the arms 15 in the form ot a loose connection as the free ends ot the levers 211 are provided with forked portions 24k which embrace the rounded end bars 15 ot the slotted arms 15. It is, of course, under stood that the ends ot the arms and the levers could be bent around the bar 15 so as to form. a positive connection between the levers and arms without departing from the spirit ot my invention, and l do not wish to limit myself to any particular manner or' connecting the arms and the latches to the operating levers.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that l have `provided a clothes wringer in which a movably mounted top -bar is held in predetermined position by pivoted latches having slotted arms extending around the pressure screws carried by the top bar and having a connection with the manually operated means and the autoy lnatically operated means so that the pressure can be released by either ot' said means instantaneously.
