REA P. WRIGHT, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ASSIGNOR T0 JOHN FRANCIS HEMENWAY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
ADJUSTABLE AUTOMATIC PRESSURE-ROLL RELEASE FOR CLOTHES-WRINGERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 216, 1917.
Application filed October 2, 1916. Serial No. 123,381.
To all whom 2'25 may concern:
Be it known that I, REA P. VVnicHr, a citizen of the United States, residing at I/Vashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Automatic Pressure-Roll Releases for Clothes-Ringers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in adjustable automatic pressure roll release for clothes wringers, the object being to provide an automatic release which is exceedingly simple and cheap in construction, and one which is composed of a very few parts so constructed that they can be readily applied to a clothes wringer of the ordinary construction so that the pressure means for the pressure rolls can be instantaneously released when the upper roll has moved a predetermined distance upwardly so that in case of a foreign object being drawn between the pressure rolls, the pressure will be released.
Another and further object of the invention is to provide an automatic pressure release in which a pair of pivoted latches are mounted on the side bars of said frame that engage the top bar and hold the same in position within the frame, the lower ends of said latches carrying adjustable trip members which are adapted to be engaged by conical-shaped members carried by the shaft of the upper pressure roll.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a side view of a clothes wringer partly in section showing the application of my improved construction of automatic release thereto Fig. 2 is an end view of the same;
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the automatic releasing mechanism detached.
Fig. 4: is a detail view of a slightly modified form showing the cam surfaces carried by the bearing for actuating the pivoted latch.
Like numerals of reference refer to like parts in the several figures of the drawing.
In the drawing I have shown a clothes wringer comprising a frame having slotted side bars 1 in which are mounted superposed bearings 2 and 3 carrying shafts I and 5 provided with wringer rolls 6 and 7 having meshing gears, not shown, inclosed by gear casings. The upper bearings 3 are provided with spring supports 8 on which are mounted pressure springs 9 engaged by bearing plates 10 carried by a pressure bar 11. The bearing plates 10 are adapted to be engaged by pressure screws 12 mounted in threaded boxes 13 carried by a movably mounted top bar 14: which is slidably mounted within the slotted upper portions of the side bars 1. 1
Extending into the slot of the side bar of the wringer frame are screws 15 on which are mounted the apertured cars 16 of pivoted latches 17 adapted to engage the ends of the top bar 14 and hold the same in pre determined position within the wringer frame.
The pivoted latches 17 are provided with depending tail portions 18 working in guide members 19 carried by the side bars 1 of the wringer frame, the lower ends of said tail portions being offset as shown at 20, and on which are adjustablv mounted trip members 21 which are provided with slots 22 through which bolts 23 extend, carried by the tail portions, said bolts having thumb nuts 24 for clamping the trip members 21 in adjusted position thereon for the purpose hereinafter fully described. I
The ends of the upper shaft 5 of the pressure roll 7 extend outwardly beyond the wringer frame and are provided with truncated cones 25 adapted to engage the trip members 21 when the pressure roll 7 moves vertically within the wringer frame so as to force the tail portions of the pivoted latches 17 inwardly which throws the latches out of contact with the movably mounted top bar so as as to instantaneously release the pressure on the pressure rolls. It will be seen that by adjusting the trip members on the tail portions of the latches the distance of traveling the upper pressure roll can be determined so as to cause the pressure to be released at the proper time.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the upper bearings 26 are provided with extensions having cam faces 27 which are adapted to engage the adjustably mounted trip means in predetermined latches for holding said top bar members 28 carried by the pivoted latches so as to move the latches inwardly to release the top bar. p
In the operation of theautomatic release as herein shown and described, as the upper roll moves vertically beyond'the ordinary distance of movement in wringing clothes, the conical. members carried by the ends thereof are brought into engagement with the trip members 21, and on the further upward movement the trip members ride on the conical surfacesthereof so as to cause the tail portions of the latches to be moved inwardly inorder to throw thelatche's out of the path of travel 'of the top bar.
