To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, BEINHOLDG. MAR- Quann'r and Osoxn H. Srunwn, citizens of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, county of Milwaukee, and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mattress-Guards, of which the following is a specification.

Our invention relates to improvements in mattress guards.

The object of our invention is, among other things First, to provide a mattress guard which is adapted, when not in use, to be folded down upon the mattress spring, whereby it will occupy but little space when packing, storing or shipping the mattress spring; and

Second, to provide a mattress guard which is adapted to retain a mattress in its proper place upon a bed spring while it also prevents the frontedge of the mattress from being compressed or crushed out of its proper shape, as is frequently the case by persons sitting upon the side of the bed.

Our invention is further explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a side view of a mat tress supporting spring with one style of our foldable guard connected therewith.

Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device shown in Fig. 1.

Fig. 8 is a perspective view of one corner of a mattress spring as it appears from its under side, showing the guard in position for retaining the mattress upon the spring.

Fig. 4 is an end view, part in section, of the mattress supporting guard, as shown in connection with the supporting spring and mattress.

Fig. 5 represents one corner of the mattress spring showing the guard in its folded position, preparatory to packing or shipping the same.

Like parts are identified by the same reference numerals throughout the several views.

The mattress spring is of ordinary construction. We wish it to be understood, however, that our folding guard maybe used with any other style of'mattress spring.

2 is a mattress. 3 is a rectangular frame which extends around the marginal edge ofthe mattress and serves as a means of supferred form shown in Figs. 1 to o porting the mattress guard either in its upright or folded position. By the preinclusive, the guard comprises the arms l and 5, which are formed integrally and arranged at substantially right angles to each other, and the same is connected with the frame 3 by a plurality of supporting links 6, which are adapted to extend around the mattress frame 3 and the horizontal portion 7 of the mattress guard, while the upper ends of the arms 4, reference being had to Figs. 1 and 4;, are provided with circular loops 8, which are bent around the horizontal members 9 of the guard. The horizontal members 9 are adapted to extend along the respective sides 10 of the mattress, as more clearly shown in Fig. 1, while they are retained in their vertical position by contact of the members 9 with the lower side of the mattress, whereby the mattress is prevented from sliding transversely upon its supporting spring and also whereby the mattress is prevented from being unduly compressed at its edge, as it might otherwise be by a person sitting upon the edge of the bed. The mattress frame and mattress are preferably supported above the frame member 11 by a plurality of helical springs 12. It will be understood that the frame members 3 and 11 and helical springs 12 taken together, comprise the mattress spring upon which the mattress is supported.

While other devices may be devised for supporting a mattress guard in its raised position above the side of the mattress we believe ourselves to be the first to provide a guard which is adapted to be folded down upon the mattress spring for accomplishing the objects mentioned.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination with a mattress spring, of a foldable mattress guard, comprising a longitudinal member extending substantially the length of said mattress spring, two end members formed integral with and at right angles to said longitudinal member, said end members being pivotally connected with the edge of said mattress spring and adapted when said guard is in its raised position to extend beneath and bear against the under side of said mattress, a plurality of transverse members located between said In testimony whereof We affix our signaend members and connected at their outer tures in the presence of two Witnesses.
