it known that we, JOHN A. SowELL and Enwns'r E, SownLr., citizens of the United States, residing at Sacramento, in the count. of Sacramento, State 0f California, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Grease-Cups; and we do declare, the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marlred thereon, which form a part of this application.
This invention relates to improvements in grease cups used for lubricating all kinds of machinery and other wearing parts. The obiect of the invention is to invent a cup ofvinarlred simplicity and one which will eliminate the possibility of the grease oozing from the inside to the outside ofthe cup when the follower is advanced against the same. The further object is to provide ribbed guide for the follower which will iold the follower in positive position and cause it to act through the length of the grease cup in a firmV and positive manner. ln addition to this object the still further aim of the invention is to provide a simple d effective means for filling the grease cup when empty without the necessity of removing or replacing any of its. parts. In the grease cups now commonly 1n use 1t 1s necessary first to remove some of the working parts before the cup can be filled and when this is done it is often hard to replace the same for various reasons, especially when the grease cup is placed in some inaccessible place on the machinery. Also in our improved grease cup the driven worm for the follower is positioned so as to make its movement positive and the same is also continuously held to true position centrally of the grease cup. A further object of the invention is to iroduce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purposes for which it is designed.

Referring now'more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the body of the casing of the cup which is substantially cylindrical in cross section and is provided at its lower end with a removable cap 2 threaded therein, such cap having an outlet 3 provided with threads si whereby the cup may be suitably fastened -in the part to be lubricated. 0n the upper end of the casing 1 is a removable cap 5, threaded therein and provided with a central orifice 6.
The numeral 7 designates the operating handle of the grease cup provided with a sha-nk 8, turnable in the orifice 6 and held in position therein by means of a flange 9 bearing against the under side of the cap 5. Extending below the flange 9 is an operating worm 10 which terminates atits lower end in a tapered point 11, turnable and mounted in a guide'member 12 extending transversely across the lower end of the casing 1.
Screwed and mounted upon the worm 10 is the follower 13. |This follower is provided in its circumference with V shaped iiicisions 1d which are guided from like shaped ribs 15 pressed into the side walls of the casing 1. rlhis guide holds the follower 18 in positive position and causes its movementthrough easement 1 to be positive and firm. This follower 18 is of course provided with a suitable washer as at 16 in order to prevent any of the grease oozing from the under side to the upper side of the said follower.
Mounted on the upper side of the follower 13 is a cover disk 17 provided with two guide grooves 1S through which appear small set screws 19. Said screws are fastened in the follower 13. These said screws 19 hold the disk 17 in position on the follower 13 and likewise limit the rotary movement of the disk 17 with respect to the said follower 13. This disk 17 is Vcut out at 2O to allow the same to have the rotary movement relative to ribs 15. rlhe follower 13 is provided with an orifice or opening 21 extending through from its upper to its lower sides and in disk 17 is a small opening 22 adapted to be moved in or out of register 21 as the disk 17 is rotated to the extent of its movement as fixed by the 0'uiC-,es 1S. n the cap 5 is an elongated slot 255 disposed directly above the normal position of the. openings 21 and 22. @n the disk 17 is a small vertical pin 2d which when the follower is at its uppermost position projects through the slot 23. By means of this pin the disk 17 can therefore be moved from the outside of the cap 5 to bring the pin 2i in and out to register with the opening 21.
lllhen the grease cup is empty the handle V7 is operated to move the follower 13 to its uppermost position. This advances the pin 2st through the slot 23. This pin 24 is then used to move the disk 17 to bring the openings 22 and 21 to register with' each other. This then opens communication from the outside of the grease cup through the openings 2.8 22 and 21 to the inside of the grease cup. `hereupon the grease cup can be filled with grease by means of inserting the discharge nozzle of a grease gun through the registered openings. When the cup is filled the pin 2l can then be used to turn the disk 17 to move the opening 22 out ofV register with the opening 21 whereby the disk 17 will forma normal closure for the opening 21 and prevent any of the grease from backing, through the same when the follower is advanced. YJith'the operating of the handle 7 the operated worm 10 is thon rotated to advance the` follower 13 on the same and force the grease around the sides of the guide 12 whereupon the cup can again be refilled in the manner indicated above. n
l? rom the foregoing description it will be readily seen that we have produced such a derice as substantially fulfils the object of the invention asset forth herein.
lVhile this specification sets forth in detail the present 'and preferred construction of the device, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention, as defined by the, appended claims.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: Y 1. A grease cup comprising a casing provided with an outlet from the bottom and an operating worm fixed for rotary motionvon the top, a follower on the worm, and means for filling the cup with grease without removing any of the parts thereof, such means comprising an opening through the casing and an opening through the follower, such openings being arranged to be brought into communication with each other when the cup is filled and such communication shut oil'l when the cup is in operation.
2. A grease cup comprising a casing and follower mounted for movement within the casing and provided with an orifice, a disk mounted on the follower' arranged to normally close such orifice, such disk being provided with an orifice arranged to be brought into register with the iirst named orifice, and an opening in the casing body adapted to register with both of these first named orifices when they register with each other.
3. A grease cup comprising a casing and a. follower mounted for movement therein and provided with an orifice, a disk mounted on the follower and arranged to form a normal closure for such orifice, such disk being provided with an orifice arranged to be brought into register with the first named orifice, such casing being provided with an orifice arranged to register with both of the iirst named orifices when they are in register with each other, and a pin on the disk adapted to project through the orifice in the casing whereby the same may be used to move said disk.
