To all whom it may concern:
Be it lrnown that I, ELLwooD l/V. COURT- NnY, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to hand operated pumps; and the object of my invention is to provide a pump especially adapted for lubricating purposes; taking the place of an ordinary oil cup and of such construction that oil can be withdrawn from a reservoir adjacent the pump and forced to a bearing some distance away from such reservoir, and the pump may also serve to fill such reservoir from a suitable supply point. The structure forming the subject of my invention is especially applicable for use in the lubrication of marine and stationary engines and the engines and other moving parts of automobiles where many of the bearings are relatively inaccessible, although it may also be used for oiling ordinary bearings, and it is peculiarly available for removing wastel oil, water, or other liquid accumulating in pockets of machinery.
A further object of my invention is to provide a pumping device available for any purpose where it is desired to inject liquid; such structure being provided with ports which may be alternately inlet and outlet ports, and a movable member carrying valves which control the-.directi0n of flow through said ports. In each instance, however, liquid is sucked into the barrel of the pump, and such liquid may be subsequently ejected through either port by the proper manipulation of the member carrying the valves.
A still further object of my invention is to render such pump available for use as an ordinary syringe.
My invention is fully shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1, is an elevation of my improved pumping apparatus showing the operating part of the same in section; Fig. 2, is a view similar to the sectional part of Fig. 1, showing a portion of the structure in a different position; Fig. 3, is an inverted plan view of the lower portion of the structure, and Fig. 4, is a sectional view, taken on the line z-a, Fig. 1.

removable, or not, as desired, and a removable plug or member 3 threaded into the opposite end of the barrel and having passages 4 and 5 through which liquid may be forced in both directions. Within the pump cylinder a piston 6 is disposed having a suitable rod or stem 7 projecting through the cap 2 and carrying a handle S whereby said pis- Jon may be reciprocated in the pump cylin- In the drawings herewith, the pump structure is shown as connected to a reservoir 10, although it will be understood that it may be entirely free with iieXible connections; one leading from a source of supply, and the other to points where the liquid is to be discharged. In the particular instance shown, the reservoir has a pipe 11 connected by means of a coupling member 12 to a nipple 13 carried by the member 3, and through which nipple the passage 4 extends; a washer 14 being preferably employed to insure a liquid-tight joint. The passage 5 eX- tends through a nipple 15 on the opposite side of the member 3, and this nipple is connected to a pipe 16 by a coupling member 17; a washer 18 being employed to provide a liquid-tight joint.
Passing through the member 3, is a stem 19; the upper end of which is reduced at 2O and carries a valve-block 21 having recesses 22 and 23, with apertures 24 and 25, and valves 26 and 27 controlling the inlet to and outlet from the chamber of the pump cylinder via said apertures 24 and 25 and the passages 4 and 5. lVhen the valve-block is in the position shown in Fig. 1, the lifting of the piston within the cylinder will open the valve 26 and liquid within the reservoir 10 will be drawn into the pump chamber through the passage 4. When the piston is moved in the opposite direction, the valves remaining as in Fig. 1, the liquid drawn into the pump chamber will be forced past the valve 27 and discharged through the passage 5. Vhen the valve-block 21 is reversed, as shown in Fig. 2, the lifting of the piston will draw liquid into the cylinder from the passage 5 past the valve 26, and then when the piston is depressed the liquid may be forced past the valve 27, through the passage 4 to the reservoir 10. In some instances it may be desirable to employ the pump as an ordinary syringe, and for this purpose the valve-block may be provided with an additional aperture 28, unvalved and disposed at a suitable point intermediate the apertures 2st and Q5, which aperture 28 may be brought into registry with either of the passages et or 5, under certain conditions. This aperture 28 is preferably at such a point that it will be brought into registry when the valve-block is moved substantially a quarter turn; movement of such block being in the direction of the arrow m, Fig. 4.
The stem 19 carrying the valve-block is provided with a thumb-piece or handle 29 whereby said block may be moved to place the apertures 2i, and 28 in registry with either of the passages t or 5, depending upon the use to which the pump is to be put. To prevent excessive movement of t-he handle 29 and in order to insure proper positioning or registry of the valved openings 2l and 25 with respect to said passages el and I provide the member 3 with pins 30 to limit the swing of said handle. In addition I may provide a catch :for the handle 29 in the form of slight projections 3l designed to hold said handle when the aperture 28 ot the valve-block is in registry with one of the passages in the member 3, passage Jfor instance. To maint-ain the valve-block in con tact with the upper surface of the member 3 and insure a relatively liquid-tight joint therewith and with the inner wall of the cylinder, I provide a spring 32, carried by the stem 19 and interposed between the bottom of said member 3 and the handle 29, which is hollowed to receive it. The stem 19 is squared at 33 to enter a similar socket in the handle so as to be moved thereby; the handle being secured to the stem by a screw 34. The spring 32 enables the handle to ride easily over the projections 3l when it is desired to move the valve-block into registry with the passages 4 and 5.
The valves Q6 and 2T may be usual iap valves ot rubber, leather, or other similar or suitable material, or any other form of valve, of metal and having movable parts, or one comprising a loose member mounted in a cage, may be employed.
I claim:
l. The combination with a pump cylinder having a piston therein and an operating handle, of an apertured member secured to the lower end of said cylinder, a movable valve-block carried by said apertured member and interposed between the same and the interior of the cylinder, valves carried by said block, a stem journaled in said member in which the valve-block is attached, a handle secured to said stem for moving said valve-block, and a spring on said stem interposed between said handle and the ported member for holding said valve-block to its seat.
2. The combination with a pump cylinder having a piston therein and an operating handle, of an apertured member secured to the lower end of said cylinder, a movable ported valve-block carried by said apertured member and interposed between the same and the interior of the cylinder, valves car ried by said block, a stem journaled in the apertured member, a handle carried by said stem for moving said valve-block, the latter having two ports for registry with the passages ot the apertured member and an auxiliary port for registry with either passage of the apertured member, means for holding said valve-block to the apertured member, and means for engagement with the handle whereby the valve-block may be held with its auxiliary port in line with'one of the passages of the apertured member.
3. The combination, with a pump cylinder having a suitable piston therein to which an operating handle is connected, of an apertured member secured to one end of said cylinder, a movable valve-block carried by and rotatable with respect to said apertured member and disposed wholly within the cylinder, valves carried by said valve-block, the ports closed by said valves being in line with the cylinder, and a stem secured to said valve-block and journaled in the apertured member with a projecting portion whereby said `valve-block may be rota-ted.
