Application tiled July 2, 1919. erial No. Qualtt).
To all 'whom z't may concern:
Be it known that l, AnznNo J. DILLEY, of Muir, in the county of llonia, in the State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements inV Grease-Guns, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to certain improvements in grease guns involving the use of A a pump oli the reciprocatory piston type, having an inlet and an outlet in one end for communication respectively with a source of supply and a delivery nozzle, and reference is hereby made to my copending application, Serin No. 277,827, ined ree. le, 1919.
The grease adapted to be used `for lubricating purposes, and particularly as applied to the various bearings of motor vehicles, is
either put ,up in cans, pails or receptacles of convenient size for delivery to the user and one of the objects of my present invention is to provide a pump which may be easily and quickly attached to an outlet 'from the can or pail and used in connection therewith in lubricating bearings or other parte, thus permitting the pump to be used as the relilling medium for transferring the grease directly lfrom the can to the bearing and avoidin the inconvenience of separate means 'or filling the pump.
Another object is to enable the valve, which controls .the inlet and outlet ports of the pump cylinder, to be operated simultaneously with movement of the piston of the pump so that the communication between the inlet'port` and the cylinderis opened and that between-'the outlet port and the cylinder closed at the end of the compression stroke, while the communication between the outlet port and the cylinder is opened and that between the inlet port and tliecylinder is closed at the end of the suction stroke of the piston. L
Other objects and advantages relate to the construction, formand arrangement of the parts for operating the said valve which is of the sleeve type and of the various details of construction of the device as will more fully appear from the following description taken in connection with the accompanyingdrawings in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical cross section illustrating my invention as applied to a suitable pail, can, or the like.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the pieton of the pump at substantially its limit of upward movement and with the inlet port closed and' the outlet port opened. Fig. y3 is a detail sectional view of the sleeve valveand its directly associated parte.
Fig. 4 is a horizontal section through the lower end of the device intersecting the inlet and outlet ports from the pump cylinder.
The illustration discloses an ordinary grease containing can or pail Vl having a suitable opening or outlet 2- preferably in the side wall thereof. For association with such a pail l provide a casing -3- having an elbow shaped inlet nozzle 4ladapted' to terminate near the bottoni of the pail, ,and preferably diametrically opposite the inlet nozzle 4fis an externally threaded nipple 5 of a diameter suitable to pass through the opening 2 for engagement with an internally threaded elbow 6- adapted for connection to a delivery tube -7- which may be of a flexible nipple 5.- a grease tight joint is toi-med and, packing may be used if desired. This elbow -6- maybe provided with a 'toot rest l1- if desired, and the elbow and loot rest may be formed of a single casting and in like manner the casing 31%, the inlet elbow -4- and nipple' -5 maybe 'formed ot a single casting. y
Thecasing 3 isv preferably formed with an interior chamber of substantially cylindrical form and adapted to receive the lower end of a pump cylinder l2- which tightly fits Within the casing and is secured thereto in any suitable manner as by a screw 1B- The pump cylinder has suitable inlet and outlet ports lll and 15- alined respectively with the inlet elbow -4 and the nipple --5-.
Within the pump cylinder -12- is arranged a suitable piston .-\16- mounted upon a tubular plunger 1.7- provided With an operating handle -18-. The piston may be mounted upon the plunger by means of a nut 419- and a cap nut 20- the cap nut being provided with a small axial opening adapted to permit tree axial movement of a lifting rod 21 having a. knob 22m positioned within the plunger llt) and of a cross sectional area greater than the cross sectional area of the axial opening in'the cap nut to prevent removal of the knob therefrom and limit the sliding movement of the knob in one direction.
The lower end of the lifting rod -v-21 is connected in any suitable way to a sleeve valve -23- movable within the cylinder `12 and having openings -24 and 25 adapted to be brought respectively into registration with openings -14- and 15--. However, the openings -24 and 25- are arranged at different points lengthwise of the sleeve so that when opening Q4- is in registration with port -14- the port l-15-- is closed by the sleeve valve and reversely when opening -25- is in registration with port fl-fthe inlet port lllis closed by the sleeve valve. As shown, the
lifting rod -21- is secured to the vsleeve by meansv of a diametrical cross bar 26+-` through which the end of the rod passes and to which it is suitably connected as by nuts illustrated.
The knob --22-` is of a size to freel within the tubular piston rod or p unger -17 and is of a suitable length to effect the operation about to be described.
When the piston is near the end of itsr compression stroke, assuming that the sleeve valve 23-` is in the position shown in Fig. 2, the lower end of the piston, in this instance the cap nut -20- will contact with the cross bar or associated parts of the sleeve 23- and force fthe sleeve valve downwardly into contact with the bottom of casing -3- thereby closing the outlet port -15- and opening the inlet port -14.-'-, the sleeve -23- remaining in the position shown in Fig. 2 until such point of contact is reached by reason of the free sliding relation of the knob -22- and the tubular piston rod -17-.
The sleeve valve -23- remains in this position until substantially the end of the suction stroke and until knob -22- comes yinto contact with cap nut -20- at which time the sleeve moves axially within the cylinder 12 simultaneously with the movement of the. piston -16- and is therebly drawn to the position shown in Fig. 2 to c ose the inlet port 14- and open the outlet port -15- preparatory to discharge of the grease through said outlet port upon the next compression stroke of the piston. The operation of the sleeve valve controlling both the inlet and the outlet ports is thus effected by the normal movement of the piston at the time and in the manner desired to effect the proper operation of the device.
In order to limit the movement of the sleeve valve -23- and prevent its rotary movement within the pump cylinder, the sleeve may be provided with an axial slot slide` that various changes, modifications and substitutions may be made as to the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in. the appended claims.
