To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Onis M. PATTERsoN,a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, county of Stark, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps, of which the following is a speciiication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a pump, and particularly to a construction adapted to pump liquid either into or out of the receptacle therefor.
The invention has for an object to provide a novel and improved construction of valved connections with a pump by means of which liquid may be taken from the receptacle or compartment wherein the pump is located or drawn from a point outside of the receptacle and delivered therein.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter fully set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the append ed claims.
- In the (lrawing2--Figure 1 is a side elevation of the pump disposed in a receptacle; Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section showing the parts in position for withdrawing the liquid from the receptacle, and Fig. 3 is a similar View with the parts in position for delivering liquid to the receptacle.
Like numerals refer to like parts in the several figures of the drawing.
The numeral 1 designates a receptacle of any desired size or character, for instance, a tank in which oil or other liquid may be stored. Suitably sup orted in this rcceptacle is a pump cylinder 2 provided with a pipe 3 atits upper portion and having disposed therein a valved piston 4 connected by the rod 5 with an operating handle 6 of any desired character, for instance, pivotally mounted at 7 on the arm 8 from the pump. Any desired character of pump may be used in connection with this invention, that herein shown being a reciprocating valved piston. The lower end of the cylinder communicates with the intake pipe Q provided with a two way valve 10 having therein ports adapted to communicate with the open port 11 of its casing, or with the section 12 of the conducting pipe.
The upper end of the discharge pipe 3 of the cylinder is connected by a coupling 13 with the delivery section 14 which is in communication with the two way valve 15 provided with ports adapted to communicate l nection 21 by which liquid may be drawn from a barrel or receptacle. y
In the operation of the invention, with th parts in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the pump is ad apted to draw liquid` from the receptacle through the casing port of the valve which communicates with the inlet pipe and to deliver said liquid through the delivery pipe and valve therein to the conducting pipe, and will continue such action as long as the valves remain in this osition until the desired liquid is with drawn rom the tank. When liquid is to be introduced into the tank from the barrel or other storage recept-acle, the operating bar is drawn upward thus shifting the valves into the position shown in Fig. 3 which closes the casing port communicating with the intake pipe of the cylinder and establishes communication through the conducting pipe, while simul-l taneously the passage through the delivery pipes is cut off by the valve therein and communication established With the port of its casing so that the liquid is discharged into the tank from the upper portion of the pump. In this construction the portion of the conducting pipe beyond the delivery pipe acts alternately as an intake and outlet pipe depending upon the position of the valves, and the intake for the pump is always at its lower portion either through the valve casing port or through the conducting pipe, at which time the communication with this pipe through the discharge of the pump has been cut off. It will therefore be seen that the construction presents a very simple, efiicient and economically manufactured pump capable of either discharging from or into the receptacle at which it is located.
Having described my invention and set forth its merits, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A pump comprising a cylinder and piston therein, a combined delivery and sup ly pipe from said pump provided with a va ve having an open discharge port into a receptacle within which the pump is disposed, a
pipe communicating with the intake of said pump and providedwith a valve having an open inlet thereto from said receptacle, and a conducting pipe independent of said pump and communicating with the discharge and inlet pipes.
2. A'pump comprising a cylinder and piston therein, a combined delivery and supply pipe from said pump providedwith a valve aving an open discharge port into a receptacle within which the pump is disposed, a pipe communicating with the intake of said pump and provided with a valve having an open inlet thereto from said receptacle, a conducting pipe independent of said pump and communicating with the discharge and inlet pipes, and means for simultaneously shifting said valves.
3. A pump comprising a cylinder and piston therein, a combined. delivery'and supply pipe from said pump provided with an open ported casing into a receptacle within which the pump is disposed, a valve therein, an intake pipe for said pump provided with an open ported casing and valve therein adapted to intake from said receptacle, and a conducting pipe independent of said pump and communicating with said delivery and intake pipes.

A pump com rising a cylinder and pist0n therein, a con ucting pipe, a valved connection between said pipe and the intake of said pump having an open ported casing adapted to intake from a receptacle within which said pump is disposed, and a valved delivery and supply connection having an open ported valve casing between the discharge of said pump and said conducting pipe and discharging into said receptacle.
5. A pump comprising a cylinder and piston therein, a conducting pipe, a delivery and supply connection communicating with the conducting pipe and provided with an oscillating two way valve having an open ported casing adapted to discharge into a receptacle within which said pump is disposed, and a. connection between the conducting pipe andthe intake of said pump provided with an oscillating two way valve having an open ported casing to intake from said receptacle.

A. pump comprising a cylinder and piston therein, a conducting pipe, a delivery and supply connection communicating with the conducting pipe and provided with an oscillating two way valve having an open ported casing adapted to discharge into a receptacle within which said pump is disposed, a connection between the conducting pipe and the intake of said pump provided with an oscillating two way valve having an open ported casing, lever arms extended from said valves, and an operating rod connecting said arms. i
7. The combination with a pump, of a conducting pipe communicating with the intake and discharge therefrom, and shiftable valved means having ports adapted to intake from a receptacle within which the pump is disposed intermediate of the conducting pipe and the intake of said pump with a discharge through the conducting pipe, or an intake through the conducting pipe and discharge into said receptacle intermediate ofthe pump delivery and conducting pipe.
