PATENT OFFICE. l
FORCE-FEED LUBRICATOR. 4,-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0,784,788', dated March 14, 1905. Appncanon'iiiea Jun@ 11,1904. serial No. 212,143.
T o all whom t may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES JACOB GUS- TAFsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chattanooga, in the county of Hamilton and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful F orce-Feed Lubricator, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to force-feed lubricators, and has for its principal object to provide a novel means for forcing a lubricant into the oil-channels of journal-boxes and other portions of machinery, cars, and the like.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel form of force-feed lubricator in which provision is made for discharging1 a predetermined quantity of oil to each portion of the device to be lubricated-as, for instance, in oiling the journals of mine-cars and other vehicles each of the journals will 'receive precisely the same quantity of lubricant.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a novel form of f0rce-feed lubricator which may be attached to an ordinary form of oil-receptacle and readilyT carried about from place to placeduring the dlubricating operation.
With these and other objectsi in view, as will more fully hereinafter appear, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts 'hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out. in the ap pended claims. it being understood that va-.
rious changes in the form, proportions, size, and minor details of the structure may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of a force-feed lubricator` constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view of a portion of the same with the parts in different position. Fig.
3 is a transverse sectional elevation of a por tion of the hollow Fig. 2.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings. i
plunger-on the line 3 3 of 10, normally held to its seat by a coiled The lubricator-receptaclel is inthe form of a metallic casing which preferably is provided with a lhandle 2 for convenience in carrying it from place to place, and in the up-l of the threaded portion of a cylindrical casing 6, that extends for some distance Within the casing and has a projecting flange orcollar 7 per portion of the receptacle is a illingwith a non-circular face for engagement by a wrench or similar tool for screwing the casing 6 into position. At the inner end of the casing 6 is an inturned ange 8, having a valve-seat 9, against which tits a disk valve compression-spring 11.
Arranged within the cylindrical casing 6 is a loosely-ttting plunger 12, having at its inner end an annular liange 13, that is provided with a plurality of notches or recesses 14. in order to permit the free passage of the oil. The plunger 12 tits within a stuliing-,boxvnut 15, that has a forwardprojecting annular flange 16,'forming a guide for the outer portion of the plunger. The nut screws on the outer threadedy end of the casing 6, and be-4 tween the end of the case and the nut-'is a `packing-ring 17, formed ofv yieldable-material so arranged as to prevent the leakage, of
oil 4around the exterior of the plunger, and4 this packingering, furthermore, forms a'seat or cushion for checking outward movement of the plunger. The packing-ring receives the impact gof the angevl, and any oil that may accumulate between the iange and ring is free to pass rearward through the notches 14 to the interior of the casing. j
The hollow plunger 12 is provided at its outer end with a vvalve-seat for .the reception of a disk valve 18, the stem of which is guided Within the bore of the plunger, and against the outer face of the valve presses a` compressionspring 19, that is held within a nozzle member 20, having a threaded connection with the end of the plunger 12.
Between the inner end of the casing 6 and the similar end of the plunger 12 is a strong compression-spring 21, that normally tends to force the nozzle outward to the position illustrated in Fig. 1, and during this outward movement the pressure of oil in the casing will open the valve 10 and the oil will flow freely to the interior of the casing and the hollow plunger, sothat all parts will fill with oil when the nozzle is in the position shown. The nozzle is then applied inside against the oil-hole in a wheel-hub or other point to be lubricated and pressure is applied'for forcing the nozzle rearward, or the nozzle may remain stationary while the receptacle and all of the connected parts is moved forward. This pressure serves to close the valve 10 and open the valve 18, the oil within the casing 6 and the hollow plunger heilig forced outward through the nozzle to the point to belubricatcd. This Yoperation may be repeated as often as necessary; but for ordinary purposes 'a single application will suffice, and each part lubricated will therefore receive the same measured quantity of oil.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is.
1. ln a lubricating apparatus, an oil-recep- Y tacle, a casing projecting thereinto and having a valved inlet for the passage ol" the oil, a stuing-box nut at the outer end of the casing, a hollow plunger guided by the casing and extending through the nut, a spring tending to force the plunger outward from the casing, a spring-closed valve at the outer end of the/plunger, and a chambered nozzle secured to the end ot' the plunger the chamber serving to contain the closing-spring of the outer Valve.
refines notched flange, a valve for closing the outlet from the plunger, and a nozzle member secured to the plunger and surrounding the valve.
3. 1n a lubricator, the combination with an oil-receptacle, ofy an internally-threaded flanged collarsecured thereto, a casing having a threaded connection with the collar and provided at its inner end with a spring-closed inlet-valve, a hollow plunger guided within the casing and provided with a notched flange portion, a spring disposed between the inner ends of the casing and plunger and tending to force the latter outward, a'stutiing-box nut having a threaded connection with the outer portion of the casing and provided with a forwardly-extending annular flange serving as a guide for the plunger, a washer held in place by the nut and forming a cushion for engagement by the notched ange, an outlet-valve at the outlet end of the plunger, a nozzle member having a threaded connection with the outer 'end of the plungerA and surrounding the valve, and a 'coiled compression-spring arranged between the nozzle and the outletvalve, substantially as specified.
1n testimony that I, claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto alixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
b CHARLES JACOB GUSTAFSN.
