To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLEY M. JEN- Nmes, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salina, in the count-y of Saline and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pitman-Boxes, ot which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in pitman boxes.
The invention has for an obj ect to provide a pitinau box including means for lubricating the entire length of the wrist pin which is secured tothe box, so as to decrease the liability of cracking and over heating the bearing.
With these and other objects in View, the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter' more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim, it being understood that changes in the specitic structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention as applied to the end of a pitman. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the complete device detached. Fig. 3 lis a transverse section of the device through the bearing box. Fig. 4 is a top plan view.
My invention is especially adapted to be used in connection with such machines as reapers and binders, in which the pitman changes its position with reference to the wrist pin. To permit the movement required, I provide the bearing box with a securing hub revolubly holding a carrier pin extending from the pitman, an oil cup being secured above said box, and at a point opposite to the hub.
In the accompanying drawings, the numeral 10 designatesa cylindrical oil cup,which is threaded at its upper end. A centrally positioned curved laterally extending rib 17 is continued from the bottom of the oil cup and forms an integral part thereof. This rib 17 is secured to and forms an integral part of the tubular bearing box 18, the axis of this box extending at right angles to the axis of the oil cup 10 as will be understood in referring to Fig. 1. The bore of this box is located below and adjacent to the bottom 'of the oil cup, this box being provided with the laterally extending lip 19 clearly disr closed in Fig. 4. A' channel 17 extends from the bottom of the oil cup passing centrally through the rib 17 and extends through the bearing box as disclosed in Fig. 2. Held'within this bearing box 18, is a bushing 21 having thc circumscribing stop flange 20 provided with a seat arranged to receive the projecting stop lip 19 which is of a length equal to that of the flange 20 as disclosed in Fig. 4. This bushing is provided with the longitudinally positioned slot 22l as shown in Fig. 3, this slot registering with the channel 17 As shown this slot extends almost the full length of the bushing.
Secured to and forming an integral part of the bearing box 18, is the cylindrical securing hub 25, which hub is of a length equal to the outer diameter of the bearing box as will be understood in referring to Fig. 1. The bore of this hub 25 extends at right angles to the axis of the bearing box, and parallel to the axis of the oil cup.
A carrier pin 9, is held within this hub which pin passes through the reduced end 8 of the pitman 27, and above is secured to the hub 25 by means of the nut 26, the end of this pin being threaded. This arrangement permits the pitman a movement as required in the operation of the class of machinery in connection with which this pitman box is to be used. The end 8 of the pitman is revolubly secured to the hub 25 by means of the pin and bolt.
Secured to the threaded end of the oil cup 10, is the cap 1 1 having a central perforation through which extends the stem 13 of the piston 15, the upper end of this stem 13 being provided with a thumb nut 14 so that the piston will not become detached from the cap when the latter is removed from the cup. Interposed between the cap 11 and the piston 15 is the spring 16 which normally exerts a pressure insuring the piston 15 being carried toward the bottom of the oil cup, resulting in the hard oil or lubricant held within the cup being expelled through the channel 17 into the bushing slot, insuring the wrist pin 23 being properly lubricated.
In Fig. 1, a. fragmentary portion of the member carrying the wrist pin is shown and marked 24.
In order that the cap 11 may be securely fastened to the oil cup, I provide the same with the rectangular nut extension 12 arranged to be engaged by a suitable Wrench.
A pitrnan housing constructed according to my invention is simple and inexpensive, and both durable and efficient in operation.
Having thus described iny said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
The herein described pitman box having in Combination, an exteriorly threaded oylindrical oil cup, a centrally positioned curved laterally extending rib continued from the bottom thereof, a tubular bearing box formed at the end of said rib the axis of which is held at right angles to said cup the bore of said box being located below and adjacent to the bottom of said cup said box having an extending lip, a channel being formed Within said rib extending from the bottom of said cup and entering through said box, a bushing Within said box having a ciroumsoribing stop fiange with a seat engaged by said lip, said bushing having a longitudinally positioned slot registering With said channel, a cylindrical securing hub cast integral with said box of a length equal to the outside diameter of said box the bore of said hub extending at right angles to said. box and parallel to the axis of said cup, a perforated cap carried by said cup, a piston Within said cup, a stein carried by said piston projecting through the perforation in said cap, and a spring upon said steln n'orhing against said cap, as and Jfor the purpose set forth.
