IMPROVEMENT IN WHIP-STOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,954, dated December 19, 1871.
To all whom it may concern: 4
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. MILLIKIN, of the city and county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented an Improvement in Whip-Stocks, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to the construction of an improved metallic swivel for the end of a whipstock, and to its combination therewith and with a loop to which the whip-lash may be attached.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is an elevation of a whip-stock fitted with my improved swivel end, and Fig. 2 a sectional view thereof.
Ais the stock, which may be of any approved style or pattern B, a cylindrical metallic ferrule securely fastened upon the end of the stock, and formed by preference with a narrow flan ge or bead, 0, about its lower end. D is a metallic sleeve or collar, made to fit loosely over the ferrule B so as to revolve freely thereon and form a swivel. This sleeve or swivel D is made of a length about equal to that of the ferrule above its bead c, and is itself, by preference, provided with a small bead or flange, e e, at either end thereof. The body thereof is scored or threaded exteriorly so as to present a better surface to hold the loop when applied thereto. F is a screw, provided with a head of a diameter equal or nearly equal to that of the sleeve D, and which is made to screw centrally into the end of the stock A, as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawing. The head of the screw projecting over the upper end of the swivel D serves to prevent the latter from slipping off of the ferrule B without preventing a free movement thereof upon said ferrule. Gr is a loop of leather or other suitable material whose ends are laid upon the grooved or threaded surface of the swivel D and securely fastened thereto by a wrapping of thread or cord in the ordinary manner. H is an interiorly-threaded ring or band, which is screwed down upon the swivel D over the ends of the loop and the wrapping, by which they are secured so as to protect the latter from abrasion and cutting wear.
Instead of using a wide-headed screw to hold the swivel D upon the ferrule on which it revolves the swivel may be prevented from slipping off by means of a disk or a cap, to be secured upon the end of the stock by means of an ordinary screw.
I claim as my invention- The revolving sleeve or collar D, carrying a loop, G, and turning upon a ferrule, B, in combination with an end screw or cap, F, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 20th day of September, 1871.
WM. H. MILLIKIN.
