HOLDER FOR WRIST WATCHES. APPLICATION FILED IuNEs. Isis. IIENEwED AUG. I2. I9I6.

SmvwJ/W/ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EZRA C. FITCH, 0F BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
HOLDER FOR WRIST-WATCHES.
Application led June 3, 1915, Serial No. 31,833.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EznA C. FITCH, a citizen of the United States, residing in Boston, Suffolk county, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for VVrist-lVatches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part hereof.
rThe rapidly increasing use of wrist watches among men, particularly among men in the field, as soldiers, engineers, sportsmen, etc., has made it necessary to give more attention to devices for holding such a. watch on the wrist. Ordinary braceletz such as are used by Women, obviously cannot meet the requirements of out-door use. The ordinary leather pockets, with wrist straps, are unsatisfactory because the watch may be too easily separated from the strap. It is the object of this invention to provide improved means for holding such watches which shall afford comfort for the wearer as well as security and at the same time shall permit the watch-case to be separated from the holder when required. The invention will be more fully explained hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawing in which it is illustrated and in which Figure l is a view in perspective showing a watch with its holder and wrist strap.
Fig. 2 is a detail view in section on the plane indicated by the line 2-2 of Fig. l, but on a larger scale.
Fig. 3 is a detail view partly in edge View and partly in section on the plane indicated V by the broken line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a detail view, on'a still larger scale, of a portion of the holder, as seen from the inner or under side.
Fig. 5 is a detail view in section on the broken line indicated by the line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a detail view of the back of the watch, illustrating a feature to be referred to.
The watch movement a, with the particular character of which the present invention is in no wise concerned, is shown as having a dial a and a winding and setting stem a2 and as adapted to be received snugly within an outer case b. The latter has an annular part or center ZJ and a bezel 52 threaded within the center b and carrying a crystal a3. The center Z9 and bezel 52 may be of any suitable metal, but the back b3 is pref- Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 2o, 1917.
Renewed August 12,' 1916. Serial No. 114,638.
erably, though not necessarily, made separate from the center 2) so that it may be made of or plated with gold or some other metal or material which will resist the corroding action of perspiration, which would otherwise go on rapidly when the back is in Vcontact with the wrist. Furthermore, in order to provide for circulation of air so that evaporation of insensible perspiration, that is, perspiration which is not sufficiently profuse to form visible drops on the skin, but nevertheless creates a moist condition of the skin, may go on without interruption, the back b3 is provided with shallow air channels, which may be arranged as shown in Fig. 6, some of such channels, as b4, being concentric while others, as b5, are radial.
rThe strap, or other means for securing the watch upon the wrist, is not secured directly to the outer case but is connected to the same through the intermediary of a strap plate c which has a circular opening c adapted to fit closely around the threaded portion ofthe bezel and to be held firmly by the overlapping portion of the bezel against the edge of the center b. To this strap plate c may be connected the straps l al by which the watch is secured to the wrist of the wearer. The two parts CZ and Z are preferably connected to the strap plate so that they may be removed altogether and also in such manner as to permit some elasticity. For this purpose each strap member d and 6l is looped through an ,eye e which is yieldingly secured to the strap plate c. As shown, the loop or eye c is secured to slides c which move in guides c2 secured to the under or inner side of the strap plate c, with interposed springs e3, which hold the loops normally in their contracted relation but permit them to yield so that the strap may be drawn tightly, enough to encircle the wrist snugly without impeding circulation or causing discomfort.
It will be understood that various changes in details of construction may be made to suit different conditions of use and that the invention is not restricted to the particular construction shown and described herein.
I claim as my invention 1. A case for a. wrist watch and means to secure the same in position on the Wrist, said case having its back formed with grooves for circulation of air between the wrist of the wearer and the back.
2. A case for a wrist watch and means to secure the same in position on the Wrist, said case having, a back of non-readily corrosive material formed with grooves for circulation of air between the wrist ofthe wearer and the back.
3. rllhe combination of a ease for a watch comprisingl a Center and a bezel, and a strapplate held between the Center and the bezel and adapted to have straps connected thereto for securing' the Case to the wrist.
4. The combination of a ease for a watch having' avcenter and a bezelthreacled into the center, and a strap plate encircling` the case between the bezel and the Center, and
adapted to have straps connected thereto for securing the ease to the wrist.
5. The combination of a ease for a watch, and strap loops yieldingly connected to the case and adapted to have straps connected thereto for securing' the ease to the wrist.
6. rl`he combination of a ease for -a watch., a strap plate secured to the case, and strap loops yieldingly secured to the-strap plate, and adapted to have straps connected thereto for securing the case to the wrist.
This specification Signed this 29th day of May A. D., 1915.
