To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MICHAEL H. SMITH, a citizen of theUnited States of America, and a resident of Foburn, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cord-Fastening Devices, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to fastening devices particularly adapted for use on toggle frames used for stretching hides and particularly hides which have been coated with a patent leather preparation or some similar material. V

One object of the invention is to provide a plurality of cord securing members which may be quickly and permanently attached to said frame.

The invention consists in a novel con--- struction of cord securing members formed of wire with oppositely extending loops, and provided with prongs by which they the frame.

The invention further consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be fully understood by reference to the description of the drawings and to the claims hereinafter glven.

For the purpose of illustrating the invention, one preferred form thereof is illustrated in the drawings, this form having been found to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which the invention consists can be variously arranged and organized, and that the invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as ierein shown and described.

The ends 11 extend only a short ditsance into the recesses formed therefor inthe side bars 12, and are held therein by means of a U-shaped member 13 extending around the bars12 and having barbed ends 14: which are driven into the end bars 10, as indicated in Fig. 4 ofthe drawings.

A groove 15 is formed in the outer edge of each side bar 12 to receive the U-shaped member 13, and the parallel portions of said member 13 are retained in position by means of the staples 16 driven into the side bars 12.

To further stiffen the frame, the outer corners of the side bars 12 are cut away at an angle of 15 as indicated at 17 The U-shaped strap 18 is secured to said side bars by members 19 with the ends extending over the end bars 10 to which they are riveted by the member 20 as indicated in Fig. 3 of the drawings.

To each of the end bars 10 and side bars 12 are secured a plurality of cord holding members 21, each of which is adapted to hold securely a cord 22 the opposite end of which is attached in any usual manner to the hide 23 which it is desired to stretch.

Each cord holding member 21 is formed of wire with a central .portion 24 and having the opposite ends thereof bent outwardly and formed into loops 25 and 26 extending in opposite directions.

The wire forming the loop 25 is provided with a bend 25* which partially incloses the central portion 24 and has formed integral therewith a laterally extending prong 27 adapted to be driven into the side bars 10 and 12. In a similar manner the Wire forming the loop 26 is provided with a bend till and a laterally extending prong 29. The outer ends of each of the loops 25 and 26 are bent outwardly as at 30, thus forming a wedge-shaped space between the lower portion thereof and the outer face of the side bars 10 and 12 to which said cord holding member is secured.

W hen the rectangular frame 10-12 has been formed, the cord holding members 21 are driven into the side bars in any desired manner, although preferably they are staggered as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings.

When the hide is to be stretched, each of the cords 22 is passed between the loop 26 and the face of the bar 10 or 12 and wedged therein, and then beneath the loop 25 and similarly wedged between said loop and the bar 10, or 12. W hen in this position it is impossible for the cord to be pulled out, and any desired stretching of. the hide 23 may he quickly attained.

This makes a very simple construction of toggle frame having great rigidity, while the cord securing members may be readily attached thereto and when in position form very effective means of securing the outer ends of the hide stretching cords 23 without danger of slipping.

It is believed that the operation and many Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the advantages of this invention will be fully understood from the foregoing description.

Having, thus described my invention, I claim:

1. A new article of manufacture consisting of a member formed of wire with two oppositely extending loops in the same plane connected by a central portion common to both loops, the inner ends of said loops being provided with lateral portions extending over said central portion and terminating in securing prongs adjacent to said central portion and perpendicular thereto.

2. A new article of manufacture consisting of a member formed of wire with two oppositely extending loops in the same plane connected by a central portion common to both loops, the inner ends of the outer portions of said loops extending past each other and having lateral portions extending over said central portion and each lateral portion terminating in a securing prong adjacent to said central portion and perpendicular thereto.
