IMPROVEMENT IN HARNESS-PADS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,863, dated December 12, 1871.

To all whom t't may concern:

Be it known that 1,JAMEs H. GARRETT, of Greencastle, in the county of Putnam and State of Indiana, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Harness-Pads; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,

Y and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed dra-win g making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of refer ence marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a vertical section of my invention. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same.

This invention has relation to harness-pads; and the novelty consists in the improved construction of the housing which covers the padplate, as hereinafter described.

Referring to the drawing, A represents the metallic plate of a harness-pad; B, a strip ofstrong leather, constituting the body or base of the housing. O represents the iianges formed on each side of the housing, and between which is held the ring piece D, usually consisting of a strip of sole-leather, which is perforated to receive the sha-nhs of the rein-rings.

` In the manufacture of harness-pads the anges C are constructed in various ways, many of them involving much time and labor. In my invention I take for each flange a strip or Welt of stiff sole-leather, b, or other suitable material, which I lay on the strip B, and then cover it with a housing, b1, which I fasten to said strip by stitching. I arrange the welt b either in an upright or an inclined position, close to or at a distance from the edge of the strip B, according to the width of the piece D or the kind of stitching by which it may be desired to ornament the housing, Sac. I turn the housing around the edges ofthe strip B to the under side, or attach a separate piece, b2, as shown in Fig. 1, folding over the upper edge of the latter and stitching it in place.

The object of the separate pieces b2 is to allow of the use of bright-colored leather to ornament the housing, as well as to form supports to the flanges C.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination, with the welt pieces b placed edgewise on the base leather B, of the housing leather b1, and the binding-strips b2 folded around the sides and doubled over the edges of the housing-leather to form supports for the Welt-flanches, substantially as specified.
