j MAYME JEFFERSON PEPPARD, or MIlITNEAPbLIS, MINNESOTA.
HAIB-CURLER;
nepin and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hair- Curlers, of which the following is a specification.
v This invention relates to an improvement in hair curlers, the primary object being to provide a simple and inexpensive device, which is free from angles and crevices to catch or in any way injure the hair. A further object is the production of a device for curling and waving hair, which has "a feeling of smoothness to the user, and which will most effectively hold the convolutions of hair tightly together, so that the hair is most effectively curled or formed in waves. These and other objects will be apparent from the following description.
To these ends my invention comprises the 'of my invention, and Fig. 2 is another plan view when the elastic band is secured in place after the hair has been wound upon the curler.
In constructing my invention, it is preferable to make the frame of the device from a single piece of aluminumwire, this material producing a non-corrodible curler, which has a smooth feeling and which is not too slippery for holding the hair tightly, after it has been wound upon the device. A piece of this material is cut in suitable length and is shaped with a crotch A on one end, an eye B on its opposite end, and a pair of curved bars C and D forming a shank extending from the sides of the crotch to the eye. More in detail the crotch is shaped with an inwardly bent portion 3 forming a recess having sides 4 and 5 inclined inwardly toward an apex. These in;
wardly tapering sides actjas guides for most effectively directing the elastic ring or band E into the recess of the crotch, sald band,

ing' a point; immediately adj acentthe eye" B. At the point ofmerging referred to, the oint 6 between the ends of the piece-of wire and the sides and D are secured togetherI'by'means-of a clip in the formo'f a double ferrule 7 made out of thin sheet metal tightly clasped about the bars G and D, and overthe joint 6. In this manner the eye B is completed and sealed, and is adapted to hold the band of elastic material from becoming detached from the device. In view of the band of elastic material passing through the eve in the manner stated, the ring is adapted to span the curler and hold the convolutions of hair on both sides of the device when the ring is stretched and secured in the crotch. The inwardly curved sides which merge together at the end of the device adjacent the eye tend to pack the convolutions of hair tightly together toward the eye end of the curler, causing the convolutions when so packed and held bythe elastic band E to eventually curl or form the hair in waves most effectively. The crotch formation also acts as a handle for the device, enabling the device to be held and manipulated by hand during the operation of curling the hair. The recess is also sufficiently deep in the crotch to serve in engaging the elastic band and prevent it from slipping ofi of the end of the curler when it is in stretched condition. The band E is'of continuous length and is secured in In this manner a bulky projection such as is produced in-prior devices where the band is doubled about the end of the curler is avoided, which is an advantage.
In accordance with the patent statutes I have described the principles of operation of my invention, togetherwith the appa ratus which I now consider torepresent the best embodiment thereof, but I desire to have it understood that the construction shown is only illustrative and that the invention can be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those above set forth within thescope of the following claim.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new anddesire toprotect-byLetters Patent is:
A hair curler comprising a single piece of wire formed with an inwardly projecting crotch on one end having its recess formed by inwardlyv converging sides. producing tions meeting adjacent their longer than the other guide members for directing purposes, the outer end portions of said crotch being bent backwardly and inwardly to form side porends, one of said portions being and bent backwardlyito form an eye, the end thereof being adjacent the end of the other portion, afastener surrounding the meeting portions of said sides for holding them together and an Which the eye portion of said Wire passes and elastic band through wherein it is retained by said fastener, said band being adapted for engagement Within said crotch When stretched longitudinally over the device.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my nameto this specification, in the presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
