NEEDLE-GUARD FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 27, 1917;
Application filed March 29, 1916. Serial No. 87,483.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NORMAN LEDERER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, borough of Bronx, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Needle-Guards for Sewing- Machines, fication.
My invention relates to the needles of sewing machines and the object thereof is to provide a guard for such needles to prevent injury to the operator without interfering in any way with the usual machine operations.
My {.lIlVGIltlOIl is fully described in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which like characters refer to like parts in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a face view of one embodiment of my invention in operative position on a sewing machine;
Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof looking in the direction of the arrow X;
Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 6 represents a part of the head of a sewing machine containing the rod 7 of the presser-foot 8 and the rod 9 of the needle 10, my guard I being connected to the rod 7 in one form and the resser-foot 8 in th to guard the needle 10. I
The form shown in Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, comprises a clamp 11 held on the rod 7 by means of a screw 12, said clamp being cut away at each forward side thereof to provide a projection 13 of less thickness than the clamp 11, a rivet 14 being passed through said projection.
This rivet 14 serves as a pivot for the guard itself, said guard consisting of two U-shaped members 15 and 16 joined by means of a rivet 17, passed through a distance piece of tubing 18, whereby both of other form,
.said members 15 and 16 swlng in unison on the pivot 14, and these members 15 and 16 jointly embrace the path of movement of the needle 10, as is clearly shown in Figs.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Washington, D. Q.
of which the following'is a speci- 1 and 3. The member 15 is provided With finger pieces 19 and 20 whereby the oper ator may swing the guard upwardly on its pivot 14 into the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1, thereby giving access to the needle 10 and to the eye thereof for threading.
When the guard is in the normal position shown by full lines, no injury to an operator by the needle 10 can occur inasmuch as the guard extends upwardly beyond the throw of said needle, and downwardly into proximity to the presser-foot 8, and an eflicient safeguard results at slight cost.
The invention is very simple though of great value to operators by the prevention of injury to the latter and, in the present state of affairs as regards the relationship between employers and employees in many States, effecting a material saving to the former. V
The guard may be made of any desired material which accomplishes the desired results and, when once installed, becomes a component part of the sewing machine, although operators might, as individuals, be the possessors of the guards and attach the same to the particular machine with which they are working, as in factories or shops not provided with any needle guards.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A needle guard for sewing machines, comprising a clamp adapted to be secured to the presser-foot rod, a pivot at the end of said clamp nearest the needle, two separate parallel U-shaped members carried by said pivot, and means, consisting of a tubular distance piece between said members adjacent said pivot and a rivet passed through said distance piece and members, for insuring similar movement of said U-shaped members on said pivot whereby said members may be swung upwardly to permit,
