To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. REA- GAN, J r., a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Miami, in the county of Gila and State of Arizona, have invented a new and Improved Wrench, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
General objects of my invention are to provide a wrench or spanner having heads at the opposite ends arranged to be simultaneously swung in their own planes through angles to convert the wrench into an S-wrench; to provide for varying the angles through which the wrench heads are moved in their own planes; to provide for effecting the stated movements of the wrench 7 heads by a relative movement of handle or shank sections; and to provide wrench heads adapted to be swung at right angles to their own planes in addition to the angular adjustment in their own planes.
Further objects of the invention and the advantages of the novel construction and arrangement of'the parts will appear as the description proceeds.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specie fication in which similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in all the views. Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench embodying my invention, parts being in section, the wrench heads being disposed straight with the shank or handle sections;
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the wrench heads swung laterally in opposite directions in their own planes to constitute an S-wrench;
Fig. 3 is an edge view;
Fig. 4 is a cross section on the line 4-4, Fig. 1.
In carrying out my invention in practice, two parallel handle or shank sections 10, 11 are provided. Connected with said sections at one end is a wrench head comprising a fixed jaw 12 and a movable jaw 13. Said movable jaw may be adjusted in any approved manner, there being shown a known means of adjustment including a rack 14 on the movable jaw and a worm 15 mounted to turn in the fixed jaw. At the opposite end the wrench head includes a fixed jaw 16 and a movable jaw 17 the latter having a rack 18 engaged by a worm 19.
Each fixed jaw has a pivotal connection, as at 20, with an angular connecting member 21, pivoted by pins 22 to the handle sections, 10, 11, the pivots 20, 22 of each joint being at right angles to each other. The connecting members 21 and the adjacent ends of the shank sections are rabbeted to prevent increase of thickness at the ends of the shanks. The pins 22 passing through the rabbeted members are tapered and receive nuts 22 having curves to receive a screw driver or wrench device, whereby to tighten or loosen the pivot as desired.
One shank has a rack 23 on the inner face thereof which is engaged by a worm 24, mounted to turn in a U-shaped block 25 which is slidable transversely in a recess 26 in the opposite shank section. A spring 27,
here shown as abowed plate spring, bears against the back of the block 25 and holds the worm 24 in engagement with the rack 23. I By the described construction, upon turning the worm 24, the handle sections, 10, 11, will be given a relative longitudinal movement, the movement being a parallel one after the manner of a parallel ruler. The relative movement of the handle sections will oppositely swing the respective wrench heads on their pivots 20 from the position shown in Fig. 1 to that in Fig. 2. The angles through which the wrench heads are moved may be varied according to the position of the work. Shoulders 28 on the wrench heads adjacent to the pivot heads 20, prevent the heads from being swung laterally beyond 45. As the handle sections approach each other in moving from the position of Fig. 1 to that of Fig. 2, the sprin 27 will yield, thereby permitting theblocfi 25 to recede within the recess 26.
The pivot pins 22 permit of the wrench heads being swung transversely to their own planes, that is to say, at right angles to the pivots 20, when the pivots 22 are in line. The adjustment on the pivots 22 may be through an angle of 90 from a straight line.
It will thus be seen that the respective wrench heads are capable of a wide range of adjustment to suit a particular situation. The provision of the pivoted extensions 21 on the handle sections, permitting the lat- .eral swinging of the heads in their own planes, greatly increases the usefulness of the tool in adapting it to engage nuts and the like not conveniently accessible with the wrench heads in the plane of the handle sections.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A Wrench including handle sections, means to give relative longitudinal move ment to said sections, and a Wrench head at each end of the handle sections and pivotally connected with both sections to swing in their own planes in opposite directions in response to the movements of the handle sections.
2. A Wrench including handle sections, means to give relative longitudinal movement to said sections, and a wrench head at each end of the handle sections and pivotally connected with both sections to swing in their own planes in opposite directions in response to the movements of the handle sections, the said wrench heads being pivotally mounted also to swing through an angle at right angles to their own planes.
3. A Wrench comprising separate handle sections, a rack on one section, .a worm meshing with said rack, a spring-pressed block in which said worm is mounted, said block being movable transversely in the op posite handle section, and a Wrench head at each end of the handle and pivotally connected to the adjacent ends of the handle sections.
