Be it known that we, ARCHIBALD J. STEW- an'r and HARRY N. STEWART, citizens of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented 'new and useful Improvements in Mittens, of which the following isl a specification.

This invention relates -to a mitten.

It is the object of this invention to provide a mitten which is especially adapted for use in protecting the hands when handling heated articles and which is especially applicable for use by bakers in handling baking pans, trays, and the like, and workmen in general in handling hot tools and implements.

Another object is to provide a mitten having heat insulating qualities, which is simple in construction and so designed as Vto econo mize material and labor in its manufacture so that a substantial mitten of this type can be produced at small cost.

A further object is to provide a mitten which is padded with a heat insulating or resisting material having a palm and thumb portion in which the adjacent faces of said portions are continuous and free from seams, thereby enabling the padding of the mitten at the juncture of the thumb and palm portions and at the same time increasing the wearing quality of the mitten at this point.

In .carrying out the invention, a blank 11 is formed, shown in Fig. 6, of a suitable material preferably leather, which is .fashioned from a substantially rectangular sheet of material, one end of which is scalloped to forni an arcuate edge 12 which is flanked at each end with arcuate edges 13 adapted to be folded rearwardly and to be'secu'red to the edge 12 by stitching or the like, as shown in Fig. 2; the blank being designed to be folded alongl fold lines indicated by the dotted lines a and b in Fig. 6. The material extending between the fold lines a and 7) constitutes the palm portion lll of the mitten and the material extending bctween the fold lines a and Zi' and the longitudinal edges c and Z of the blank form the side portions 15 of the mitten, adapted to extend a short distance over the back of the hand and wrist. The blank 11 is formed with a downwardly extending substantially parabolic-shaped or U-shapen cut 16 forming a correspondingly shaped flap 17 which constitutes the inner face of the thumb portion 18 of the mitten.

The U-shaped cut 16 is arranged adjacent one of the side flaps 15 and is, enlarged at its terminals to formv eyelets or perforations 16 by which a suiiicient amount of the material is cut away at the base of the iap 17 to permit its being bent back toward the palm portion without buckling or drawing the Hap and palm portion out of shape.
