SIMON LITWIN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
Application filed December 6,1916. Serial No.135,340.
To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that I, SIMON =LITWIN, asubject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in safety or security pockets for garments, and the principal object of the invention is to provide devices attachable to the inside of the pocket whereby unauthorized entering is prevented.
Another object is to provide such safety means in formscheap to construct and which may be easily applied by a tailor or other person either when the garments are made or at a later period.
These objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front view showing the exterior of the garments, the interior of the pocket and its attachments being indicated by broken lines.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. l, the flap being omitted.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing one main element of the locking device in detail.
Fig. 4 is a front view of another element of the device.
Fig. 5 is an end view of the same.
Fig. 6 is a similar front view to that of Fig. 4, but having parts removed showing the interior, and
Fig. 7 is a view showing the opposite side of the same element.
In Figs. 1 and 2, which show the application of the device, the material of which the garment is made is indicated by the numeral 10, the pocket portion 11 which is attached .along the side and lower edges 12 and 13 respectively, being of ordinary construction, as is also the cover flap 14 which prevents the insertion of matter unless the same be raised, it normally covering the opening leading to the pocket.
Attached to the inner side of the pocket element 11 is a thin resilient plate 18, the same being sewn through the openings 19 so as to be positively secured to the material, and may be further secured by a strip 20 of textile fabric, as will be apparent in Fig. 2.
Extending outwardly from the inner face POCKET-LOCK.
Specification of Letters."Patent. "Patented Feb; 20, 1917.
material 10 is another plate 26 secured by sewing through the openings 27 disposed adjacent to the longitudinal margin of the plate and on its inner surface is secured a rectangular hollow casing 30 by rivets 31 disposed substantially at the corners, the casing containing an L shaped slide 33 having fixed at its center the stem of a knob 35 by means of which the slide may be moved lengthwise within the casing, a slot 36 guiding the stem or shank of the knob.
The slide 33 is formed with U projections 38 which are in register with openings 40 formed through the main portion of the plate 31, the slide 30 being pressed normally forward into operative position by a spring 42 held within the casing 30 at one end.
The openings 40 are adapted to receive the enlarged heads 22 of the studs affixed in the plate 18, the shape of the projecting heads being such that by pressing the plates 18 and 26 together, the tension of the spring moving the slide and allowing the heads to enter the openings, whereupon the spring 42 presses the slide forward, causing the U shaped elements 38 to engage with the flattened portion 23 of the projections thereby locking the plate 18.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that the plates being secured within a pocket as indicated in Fig. 2, may be so pressed together as to lock the pocket sides together in such manner that it cannot be entered through the opening 15.
In order to release the locking device so as to obtain access to the pocket the knob 35, which is normally covered by fabric 44, is pressed laterally, moving in the slot 36, opposing the spring 42, allowing the hooked elements 22 to be released through the openings 40 and the pocket sides separated. Thus it is possible to lock or unlock the pocket against intrusion without a key or other extraneous device.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a safety pocket, the combination with a plate secured to the interior wall on one side of the pocket, catch bolts extending into engagement with said bolts, and means for manually retracting said slide.
2.: In a safety pocket, the combination with a thin flexible plate engaged in the interior of the pocket on one side thereof,
studs projectinginwardly from said plate, said studs'having enlarged heads,'a casing secured oppositely to said plate on the other side of said pocket, said casing having apertures registering with said stud, a slide movable in said casing, means for manually operating said slide, means formed with said slide engageable with said studs, means for normally pressing said slide into ongagement with said studs, and means tending to open said pocket when said slide is retracted from said studs.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature this 28 day of November, 1916.
SIMON LITWIN.
