Be it known that I, ALoIs LissNER, locksmith, subject of the Emperor of Austria- Hungary, residing at Brckengasse 254, Tetschen on the Elbe, Austria-Hungary, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks for fearing-Apparel, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to an improved safety-device for locking wearing apparel or the like articles, of the kind in which a spring-pressed shackle is guided in a flat box and locked by a toothed rack and pawl gearing, the novelty consisting in that the key-operated bolt for disengaging the latter serves at the same time for a direct engagement with a button fixed on the article to be locked. Thereby, the means for connecting the safety-device with the article to be locked, become almost invisible, which is a great advantage for the intended purpose, namely to protect the articles against theft.

In the the accompanying drawing, Figures 1 and 2 are front views of the improved safety-device, with removed front wall, in its operative and inoperative position respectively, while Fig. 3 is a sectional side view of the same, with the article to be locked attached thereto.

The safety-device comprises a toothed rack a forming part of a shackle b, which is guided in a fiat box e by means of a slotand-pin connection c, d. A coil-spring f mounted in the box bears against the lower end of the rackand tends to press the same outward. In the box e, a pawl a is pivotally mounted at g and acted upon by a blade spring h, which tends to bring the pawl in engagement with the teeth of the rack a. The pawl n has beyond its pivot g an extension 1l, on the end of which is a shoulder la for engagement with a key upon insertion of the latter in the box. Above said catch, the extension is provided with a perforation Z having the shape of a keyhole slot for the passage of a button m through the round hole of the latter from outside the box, for which purpose the front wall of the box e must o-f course be provided with a corresponding keyhole slot. Said button m is firmly fixed to the article to be locked.

For intended use of the device, first the key a: is inserted in the lock and the extension i is, by turning the key, brought into the position shown in Fig. 2, in which the key-hole slot in the extension coincides with the corresponding keyhole slot in the wall of the box, whereupon the lock can be put with said keyhole slot over the button m of thek article to be locked. By turning the extension into the position shown in Fig. 2, the pawl n is so turned that it liberates the toothed rack a, which thus is projected outward by action of spring f. The key 1s then withdrawn from the box, whereupon the pawl and its extension return to their initial position by action of spring h, whereby the button 'm is locked in the box by its stem entering the narrow part of the keyhole slot Z (Fig. l). The shackle b is then placed over a fixed wall-hook or the like and again pressed inward by hand, whereby the box e becomes locked on the hook (Fig. 1) and can be removed therefrom by the use of the key a: only, which serves also for a desired disengagement of the button m from the box.

Obviously, the improved safety-device can also be used as an ordinary lock for bicycles, doors and the like, in which case the keyhole slot Z in the extension is not used.

The extension z' may, if desired, consist of several arms for locking a plurality of buttons m or articles thereon respectively, this being clear without further illustration.

I claim:

In a safety-device for locking wearing apparel andthe like articles, in combination, a flat box, a spring-pressed sliding shackle guided in the latter, a toothed rack forming part of the shackle, a spring pawl to gear with the toothed rack, an extension on the pawl beyond its fulcrum having a keyhole slot designed to effecta direct engagement with a fixed member on the article to be locked simultaneously with the engagement of pawl and rack, and a key-operated shoulder on the end of said extension, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
