To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS B. JENKINS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Sumter, in the county of Sumter and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Hangers for Springs, of Which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a hanger for springs and is intended, more particularly, for use with the semi-elliptical springs of carriages, automobiles, and like conveyances. V

The objects of the invention are toprovide hanging or connecting" means for springs which will permit of adjustments for radius, length, and drop, and which will permit of a wide range of such adjustments.

In motor vehicles and particularly automobiles, the springs as originally furnished by the makers are often broken, and it is necessary to secure replacements. In some localities, far removed from the factory in which the motor vehicle was constructed or from supply depots, it is often quite diilicult to secure a spring of the exact size, especially as regards length; my invention however permits of the supplier carrying a few springs in stock with the knowledge that by employing the adjustable hanger constituting my invention, these springs may be readily fitted to a large number of makes or types of vehicles. It will therefore be observed that one of the main objects of my invention is the provision of a spring so arranged that it may be readily fitted to a large number of vehicles, this object being of considerable commercial advantage, as it eliminates the necessity of the supplier carrying a large number of springs on hand with a consequent expense.

With these and such other objects in view as may hereinafter more fully appear, my invention consists in the novel arrangement and construction of parts set forth in the following description, more particularly pointed out in the claims, and which are shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein: Z

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device showing the same attached to one end of a spring, the spring being broken away for convenience Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device tending from the member 1, and preferably integral therewith, is a bifurcated arm 3 the prongs of which terminate in the laterally extended portions l. Each prong of the bifurcated arm 3 is provided with a transverse, longitudinally extending slot 5 which opens into an opening 6 formed in I each extended portion 4.

A bolt 7 is passed through the slots 5 and the opening or eye formed in the rolled end 8 of the sprlng 9 for thepurpose of securing the sprlng to the hanger. A bolt 10 is also passed through the opening 6 and its position determines the adjustment of the spring. A consideration ofFig. 1 will show the bolt 10 placed below the spring 9, thereby giving a greater drop, while in Fig. 2 the bolt- 10 is shown placed above spring 9 giving less drop. The adjustment shown in Fig. 2 would also be suitable for a spring of greater curvature or less radius than that shown in Fig. 1.

From the foregoing it is thought that the operation of the device will be fully understood without a further extended and particular description thereof.

In the accompanying drawing the hanger is shown connected to only one end of the spring, it being understood however that a similar hanger is secured to the other end of said spring.
