Description

N. A. ARGHIBALD.
REIN HOLDER.
APILIOATION FILED JUNE 9, 1910. I I 986,890, Patented Mar. 14, 1911.

Inventor Attorneys NEVIN AUGUSTUS ARCHTBALD, OF CONCORD, NORTH CAROLINA.
REIN-HOLDER. I
i To all eel tom it my concern:
Be it known that I, NEVIN Auousru AnoHmALn, a/citizen of the United States,
- residing at Concord, in the county of Cabarrus and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful ReinHolder, of which the following is a specification;
It is the object of this invention to pro- 'vide, in a simple, merchant-able and inexpensive form, a rein holder which may readily be assembled with whip socket, or other :like sup ort, to cooperate therewith, in engaging tie reins.
-Another object of the invention is to provide a holder adapted tocooperate with a fixed support in engaging the reins, and to provide means whereby a single holder may be adjustably mounted upon supports of different diameters.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, shown in the drawings, and specifically claimed. The drawings show but typical embodiments, and it is, to be understood that changes, properly falling within the scope of w lat is. claimed, may be made without depart-mg from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan of the blank from which the rein holder is formed; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a whip socket showing the rein holder of my invention mounted in place thereon; and Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the rein holder only, taken upon the line A-B of Fig. 2.
. The rein holder forming the subject matter of this application, is preferably fashioned from a single blank of metal, the outline of which is seen most clearly in Fig. l. "The rein holder includes a resilient tongue 1, and oppositely disposed arms 2 and 3. There may be any number of these arms, and in the present instance, two spaced pairs of them are shown, the arms being located adjacent the lower end of the tongue 1, and formed integrally therewith.
' The tongue 1. may be prolonged, as shown at 4, below the lower pair of'tongues 2, 3, in order to bear against a fixed support, to steady the rein holder thereon, when the device is mounted as shown in Fig. 2. In the arms2there are elongated slots 5; and in the arms 3 there are openings 6, preferably cir- Specification of Letters Patent. Patented 1131'. 14, 1911. Application filed June 9. 1910. cular in outline. The arms 2 and 3 are flexible, so that they may be bent to encircle a fixed support, such for instance, as a whip socket 7. Retainin elements, preferably taking the form '0 threaded bolts 8 are mounted in the apertures 5 and 6. These retaining elements 8 are provided with heads 9, the 0 enings 6 in the arms 3 being countersunk, or the rece tion of the heads. Upon the protruding en s of the retaining elements 8, clamping devices, preferably wing nuts 10 may be mounted.
It will be seen that the arms 2 and 3 may be made to encircle the whip socket 7 closely, the retaining elements 8 sliding in the elongated slots 5, to'permit the necessary adjustment of the arms 2 and 3 about the whip socket. The wing nuts 10 may be tightened,
and thus the tongue 1 will be held in close proximity to thewhip socket 7, the tongue and the whip socket cooperating to hold the reins between them.
The edges ofthe tongue 1 ma be made to converge adjacent the upper end of the tongue, as shown at- 11, in order to facilitate the bending of the upper end of the tongue 1 away from the whip socket 7, to form a hook as denoted by the numeral '14:. This bending of the tongue at 14: facilitates the introduction of the;rein between the tongue and the whip socket, and the inner edge of the tongue 1 may be rounded, as shown at 12, so that the reins will not be injured when they are introduced into the grip of the hook 141-, or when they are being removed therefrom, it beingnoted that the reins may be engaged and held between the free end of the hook and the body of the tongue 1. Moreover, this book 14 serves as a hold, by means of which the device may be held against the whip socket 7 while the arms 2 and 3 are being engaged about the socket. The structure herein described is a simple one, and is adapted to be mounted upon a whip socket, without the use of tools, to cooperate with the whip socket in engaging the reins. The device may be quickly mounted in place, and readily removed, the construetion being such that a single rein holder is adapted to be mounted upon whip sockets or other supports, having different diameters.
Having thus'described the invention, what is claimed is a As an article of manufacture, a blank for the formation of a rein holder, comprising in a resilient, one-piece structure, a straight tongue rounded at both ends and tapered at 'one, and there being spaced pairs of oppositely disposed arms projecting from the tongue at oints remote'from the tapered end thereof the arms upon oneside of the tongue having elongated slots adjacent their ends, and the arms upon the otherside of A the tongue having circular openings ad];
