To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VAL'FER F. IHRKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sieves, of which the following is a specification. 1
This invention relates to sieves and other articles such as have a screened delivery end and serve as a receptacle for flour or the like which may be sifted through the delivery end by shaking the sieve or turning an agitator within the same. Sieves of this charac ter, ordinarily employed for handling flour in small quantities are objectionable in that the flour may pass through the screen and open delivery end when the sieve is slightly jarred, shaken or carried to and fro, causing a waste of flour.
The primary object of my invention is to provide improved means for preventing leakage of flour from the delivery end of a flour sieve when the same is not in use, and furthermore, to provide means for this purpose which may be detachably secured to sieves of ordinary construction so that the device may be sold as an attachment separate from the sieve and may be applied equally well to new and old sieves.
Another object of my invention is to provide an article of manufacture in the form of a movable and detachable closure or cap particularly adapted for attachment to the delivery end of a flour sieve, which attachment is simple in design and construction so that it may be produced at a comparatively low cost.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating my improvements,
Figure 1 is a side view of a flour sieve showing my improved closure attached thereto; and
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view through the sieve taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
The sieve designated generally by reference character 3 is of a conventional type characterized by a cylindrical open-end receptacle having a scoop end 4 and a delivery end 5 and provided with a handle 6, a screen bottom 7 and an agitator 8. Since sieves of this character are generally made of a standard diameter and have either a plain or beaded lower end, I have designed a movable cap or closure adapted to be easily and readily attached to all styles of sieves whether or not the same are annularly beaded or ribbed at their lower ends.
A cap or closure support consists of a split band or ring 9 adapted to embrace the lower end of a sieve as shown clearly in the drawing and provided with outturned ends 11 that are connected by means of a screw 12 whereby the band may be securely clamped to the sieve. An imperforate cap or closure 13 of slightly larger diameter than the sieve is pivotally secured to the band 9 so as to lie in close proximity to the delivery end of the sieve covering the opening thereof and capable of being swung sidewise to open position. For this purpose a screw 14L is passed through an aperture in the closure adjacent to the peripherythereof and threadedly engaged in a'lug 15 depending from one of the end portions of the band 9. The closure is thus pivotally attached to the sieve in a very snnple manner and capable of being swung sidewise into and out of closing position, it being obvious that when the sieve is set upon a support the weight of the sieve and flour upon the closure holds the same against displacement relatively to the sieve and, if desired, the closure may be provided with a raised semi-annular bead 16 or the like adapted to engage within the lower edge of the receptacle to positively insure against sidewise displacement of the closure when the sieve is being carried to and fro. The closure may also be provided on its underside with a lower annular rib 17, affording an edge easily engaged by the hand to swing the closure into and out of operative position.
It will be noted that the construction of my improved closure for sieves is exceedingly simple, the closure itself being simply a comparatively fiat imperforate piece of metal that is attached by means of a screw to a split band which in turn may be ofany light metal. It will also be manifest that the attachment is so designed for connection to sieves having either a plain or beaded lower edge, so that the closure is adapted for attachment to any conventional type of sieve. Furthermore, the few parts and simple arrangement thereof enable the production of the attachment at a comparatively low cost.
I claim:
1. An attachment for the delivery end of a sieve comprising a split band embracing the lower end of a sieve and provided with means for drawing the ends of the band together to securely clamp the same to the sieve, a closure covering the opening of the delivery end and being pivotally mounted on said band member so as to be capable of swinging sideWise on its pivot into and out 7 of closing position, and meansfor interlockingly engaging the closure to the sieve When the closure is moved to closing posltion.
2. An attachment for the delivery end of a sieve comprising a substantially imperforate closure or cap adapted to close the delivery end of the sieve, and means detachably mounted on the sieve and to which said closure is pivotally secured on an axis parallel WALTER F. IHRKE.
