To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN M. MORAN, a subject of the King of England, residing at Miami, in the county of Dade and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Salt-Shakers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in salt shakers, the object of the invention being to provide a device of this character which is provided with an airtight-lid forming an air chamber between the top of the shaker and the lid when the i dampness from entering the shaker.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 indicates the body of a salt shaker which may be of any desired construction and is provided at its upper end with a heading 2, and further provided upon ltgzihe .emovably arranged within the upper end of the beading is a perforated cover 3 and hingedly connected to one side of the body at the upper edge thereof is a hood which is formed of a single piece of metal, as clearly illustrated by the numeral 10 and is provided at its edge with an offset 11 which, when the hood is in its closed position, is adapted to engage over the beading 2 formed upon the upper edge of the body 1. The hood 10 is hinged to one side of the body, as illustrated at 13 and is provided at its hinged portion with an outwardly extending lug 13 which is adapted to be engaged by the resilient end of the spring member 14, so as to securely hold the hood in a closed or open position.
As illustrated in Fig. 2, the hood member is in a partially closed position, the lug 13 being engaged by the inwardly pressing resilient end of the spring member 1 1 so as to prevent further closing of the hood until force is applied thereto. It will be apparent that when the hood is in its closed position, the free'end of the spring member will be disposed inwardly at a slight angle, the resiliency of the spring serving to retain the hood in its open or closed position. It will be noted that when the cover 10 is in its closed position, the offset 11 will engage with the resilient catch member 15, in order to securely retain the cover in its normally closed position.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that the spring member 14 is substantially U-shaped in form and one end thereof may be secured to the upper edge of the body in any desired manner. It will be apparent from the foregoing that I have provided a simple and durable hood for salt shakers which forms an air tight chamber between the perforated top and the hood itself. It will also be apparent that the device may be quickly and readily thrown to an open position or readily closed and, at the same time can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a comparatively low cost.
While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carryin my invention into practice, without sacri cing any of the novel features or departing from the scope of the invention, as defined by the appended claim.
