DEVICE FOR HOLDING FLEXIBLE SPOUTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 2d, 1%1'7.
Application filed July 29, 1916. SeriaI No. 112,092.
To all whom it-may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL E. DUNHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baker, in the county of Benson and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Holding Flexible Spouts, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in devices for holding flexible spouts and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with cars or the like; and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the spout may be readily and conveniently adjusted in accordance with the requirements of practice and whereby the loading of a car or the like may be materially facilitated.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved device for holding flexible spouts whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may he the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a view partly in elevation and partly in section illustrating a holding device for flexible spouts constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a view partly in top plan and partly in section of the device as herein embodied;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 33 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view partly in elevation and partly in section illustrating the clamping mechanism carried by the bracket and coacting with the supporting arm or rod;
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 55 of Fig.
Fig. 6 is an inner face view of one of the disks as herein embodied; and
Fig. 7 is a view in plan of the plate coacting with the loop of the pivot member.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, B denotes a bracket provided with the returned arms 1 whereby means is afforded for operatively. engaging the bracket with the side of a car door or other support, and disposed through said arms 1 are the clamping members 2 to afford means whereby the bracket B may be positively maintained in applied position.
3 denotes a resilient plate having one end portion permanently secured to the bracket B and having its opposite end portion returned, as at 1, the band of said returned portion 4: being formed into a barrel or sleeve 5 through which the elongated supporting arm or rod 6 is adapted to be disposed.
Disposed loosely through the returned portion 1 and in threaded engagement with the bracket B is the clamping member 7 provided with the head 8 adapted to coact with the returned portion 41-, whereby it will be perceived that upon rotation of the clamp ing member 7 in one direction, the supporting arm or rod 6 will be effectively clamped in its adjusted position either in longitudinal adjustment or in a rotary adjustment about its longitudinal axis.
9 denotes a member substantially U-shape in form and having secured to the outer surface of one of its sides 10 a plate 11 returned, as at 12, the bend of theplate 11 affording a barrel 1d adapted to receive the forward end portion of the elongated arm or rod 6 hereinbefore referredto whereby it will be perceived that the member 9 may be ad usted about said arm or rod 6 in accordance with the requirements of practice.
15-15 denote two clamping disks having their opposed faces provided with the radial recesses 16 extending entirely thereacross and adapted to register, and the axial center of said disks 15 are provided with the registering slots 17 intersecting the grooves or recesses 16 and disposed at right angles thereto.
The sides 10 of the member 9 are provided of the registering grooves or recesses 16 so that no obstruction will beofiered to the elongated member 23 when disposed between the disks 15 and within the registering recesses or grooves 16.
One end of the loop 21 is provided with the threaded extension 24: which extends through the openings 19 and and is engageable with the clamping member 25 overlying the returned portion 12, whereby it will be perceived that upon movement being imparted to the loop 21 in one direction, the barrel 14 will be caused to clamp upon the arm or rod 6 to positively hold the member 9 in its adjusted position relative to the arm or rod 6.
The opposite end of the loop 21 is provided with the threaded recess 26 through which is disposed the operating member 27, the inner end' of which being adapted for contact with the plate 28 arranged within the loop 21 and being provided with diametrically opposed peripheral recesses 29 to receive the side members 22 for a purpose which is believed to be self-evident. The plate 28 is substantially circular 'in plan and of a diameter in excess of the diameter of the opening 18, whereby it will be perceived that upon requisite rotation of the operating member 27, the requisite movement will be imparted to the loop 21 to effect the clamping action hereinbefore referred to.
The elongated member 23 has one extremity provided with the clamping band 30 adapted to be operatively engaged with the discharge extremity of a flexible spout, whereby it will be perceived that said spout may be adjusted as desired and eflectively locked in its various adjusted positions.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a device for holding flexible spouts constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be'assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice.
I claim:
