To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, Louis GOLDBURG, a citizen of the United States ofAmerica, residing at Bayonne, Hudson county, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and .useful Improvements in Dampers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in dampers, but more particularly to the means for operating same. One of the objects of the invention'is to provide a simple and eflicient damper-operating means or handle. In carrying out the object of my invention, I have provided a structure that can be assembled without the use of bolts, rivets, etc., that is to say, a structure, the handle of which is rotatably or pivotally attachedto a plate without the use of bolts, etc. By this means, I am able to provide a durable assemblage of a plate and handle. To accomplish the foregoing results, I provide the plate with clips that can be turned over to engage the handle and act to hold same in place. Other features of improvement will hereinafter appear.

Figure 1 is a sectional view of a duct illustrating a damper and my improved operating device applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged face view of the damper operating device;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged side view, partly in section, the section being taken on a line 3-3 in Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged end view of the device.
As herein embodied, my invention comprises a plate 5 arranged for attachment to a duct-6 having a damper 7 and spindle 8 therefor. The plate 5 carries a lever 9 arranged to engage the outer end of the spindle 8, which in this instance is squared at 10, the handle 9 being provided with a square opening 11 to receive said squared end. To pivotally support the handle, I provide the plate with an upstanding annular flange 12, surrounding an opening 13 to receive the round hub 14 on the handle 9. The hub 14, is, as can be seen, carried by a relatively larger plate 15, which rests upon the flange 12 and is thereby limited as to inward movement. To prevent outward movement of the handle at its pivoted end, I provide clips 16 and 17 which are preferably integral with the plate 5. j The clips rest against the outer surface of the plate 15 and retain the lever in position, but will not prevent the rotation thereof.
Before the device is assembled, or before the lever is applied to the plate 5, the clips will be positioned as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 4. To position the lever, the hub 14 will be inserted in the opening 13, after which the clips 16 and 17 will be bent over to overlie the adjacent end of the lever. Whether the device be attached to a duct or not, the lever 9 and plate 5 will always be rotatably connected. It will be apparent that, owing to the connection between the hub 14 and iiange 12 there will not be at any time any transverse play upon the part of theA lever at its point of pivotal connection with the plate 5. The clips 16 and 17 will prevent premature separation of the lever and plate, but the lever may be removed after having first bent the clips 16 and 17 outwardly.
The lever may be held in any desired radial angular position by means of a bolt 18, the head of which travels in a curved channel 19 having a slot 20 through which the bolt 18 passes. A wing-nut 21 serves to bind the lever in adjusted position. The nut 21 and bolt 18 merely serve to secure the lever in an adjusted position, but do not in any way `aid in retaining the lever and plate pivotally connected, as said pivotal connection can be maintained even though the nut 21 and bolt 18 be removed.
By referring to Fig. 3, it will be seen that the flange 12 carries an inturned annular shoulder 22, thus providing a bearing 23 for the plate 15 on the lever 9. Hence said lever will not tend to lash in the direction of the axis of the hub 14, especially as the clips 16 and 17 maintain the plate 15 in working contact with said shoulder.
What I claim as my invention is:
l. In a damper operating device, a plate having an opening adapted for attachment to a duct, said plate being provided adjacent one end thereof, with an upstanding flange surrounding the opening in the plate, a lever, a hub carried by said lever and located in the opening surrounded by said flange, said lever having a relatively larger surface forming a plate extending beyond the peripheral surface of the hub carried by the lever, the extending portion of said plate resting upon the upstanding flange, and means carried by the plate, to overlie the the lever, the extending portion of said plate resting upon the upstanding flange, and
clipsl integral with said plate to overlie the 15 lever to maintain it and the plate in pivotal connection.
