To all whom it may concern/1 Beit known that I, SILAS-FADER, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Vancouver, in the Province of British Columbia,
Canada, have invented a new and useful Knob Attachment, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved knob attachment, and is particularly applicable to IO that class wherein a square spindle passes through the latch mechanism and is provided with opposing knobs on each side of the door.
My improvement is on the means of adjusting and securing a removable knob on its stem, of supporting the neck of the knob in by its plates and that shall withal be simple and cheap to manufacture, not liable to derangement in use, and that may be expeditiously attached, adjusted, or removed.
The construction and application of my dez 5 vice are fully described in the following speci fication and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a representation of the doorknobs and their plates in position as on a door, one knob being shown in elevation and the other in section on the line b b in Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is across-section of the knob on the line a a in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of one end of the spindle and the two- 5 part knob, the latter being separated.
Reference being made to Fig. 1 of the drawings, it will be seen that the square spindle 3 of my knob is provided toward the end with a threaded portion 3, and the knob 0 is made in two parts t and 5, divided circumferentially, the inner knob portion thaving a tubular neck 4*, held to slide endwise on the spindle 3, while the outer knob portion 5 is provided with an inwardly-projecting con- 5 tral boss 5, which is bored and tapped, as at 5*, to correspond with the threaded end 3* of the spindle. This portion therefore acts as a nut, and by it the knobs may be drawn together and into close engagement with the door-plates 10. Integral with or efliciently secured to the inwardly-projecting boss 5 is a notched disk 6, and pivotally mounted on the pin 8, secured to the' other knob portion 4, is a pawl 7, pressed into engagement with the notched disk 6 by the spring 9, secured to the pawl and bearing against the interior of the knob. The pawl is provided with a projecting detent 7, designed to enter the squarecornered notches 6 of the disk 6 and prevent rotation in either direction of the parts 4 and 5 of the'k-nob in relation to one another. In the knob portion at, opposite to the position of the pawl, is a small opening 4", through which an ordinary wire nail or similar article may be inserted to raise the pawl out of engagement with the notched disk when it is desired to tighten up or remove the knob, the nail being withdrawn and the pawl-detent allowed to drop into the nearest notch of the pawl-plate when the desired degree of tightness to prevent end or lateral shake has been attained.
In order to aiford an efficient support to the spindle end of the knob in its bearings on the door-plate 10, the boss 10 of the plate has a conical recess 10, surrounding the aperture through which the spindle 3 passes, and the neck P of the knob has a similarlyshaped conical end 45, so that when the knob members are drawn up together a good lateral fit of the neck in the plates is insured simultaneously with the take-up of the end shake.
The side of the plate which bears against the door is provided with a projecting ring 10, surroundingthe aperture through which the stem passes. This ring is pressed into the wood of the door when the plates are fixed thereto, and the strain and shake of the knob are thus sustained independent of the screws, which merely hold the plate in place.
, The advantages of my invention mustnow be clearly manifest, as the threaded connections afford at once the simplest and most efficient method of adjusting and securing the knobs, and the pawl and detent-plate enable the nut to be securely locked in any de sired position, as the number of notches multiplied by the pitch of the screw-thread gives a fractional adjustment so minute that the conical necks of the knobs may be drawn into close engagement with the corresponding sockets in the door-plates and then being turned one detent back will afiord sufficient slackness to permit free movement without perceptible shake.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. A door-knob attachment, comprising in combination with a latch-engaging spindle, a plate apertured for the spindle and having an outwardly-projecting bearing, said spindle having a threaded extremity, a two-part knob, consisting of an inner and an outer member, the outer one having a threaded boss to engage the threaded end of the spindle, the inner one having a portion slidable upon the smooth part of the spindle, locking devices within the two-part knob for fixedly joining the two knob parts to cause them to turn together, the inner knob portion having its extremity formed to engage the bearing on the apertured plate; all beingarranged substantially as shown, whereby said parts can be adjustably held to an operative position by screwing the outer knob member tightly on the threaded end of the stem, as specified.
2. In a door-knob attachment of the class described, having a square spindle to which the knobs are secured, and a screw-threaded portion toward the end; a knob composed of two parts divided circumferentia lly, the inner portion, or that having the neck, being together.
3. In a door-knob attachment, as described, the combination of a spindle, having a threaded extremity, a hollow two-part knob, one portion of which is slidable on the spindle, the other part having a threaded hub to engage the threaded end of the spindle, said two parts of the knob having interlocking means located within the hollow thereof for joining them to turn as one, one of the knob portions having an opening to admit of the insertion of ,a device for moving the interlocking means to a released position whereby to allow for a free rotary movement of the outer knob member, as specified.
