.CONVERTIBLE cousine-CABINET. e'
Y To alli/whom t may concern."A
f Be it known thatI, LoRANfAf. VVIGGINS, a kcitizen of the United States, andresident lof Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented cer- 1 'ta-in newand useful Improvements in Con- Irvertible CookingfCabinets; and I `do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof.
The present invention relates to new 'and useful improvements in cabinets and is more particularly directed to the provision of a cabinet adapted to contain a stove. y
It is the object of the present invention to provide such a cabinet wherein a stove may be positioned for ordinary cooking operations and which is provided with parts adapted to conceal the stoveiwhereby the cabinet may assume the appearance of a sta-nd or similar article of furniture, it being more particularly an object to Aprovide such a structure wherein the portion of the cabinet which serves to conceal the stove also serves when at extended position to expose the stove, as a shield member to prevent marring of a wall, againstwhich the cabinet might be placed, by food stuffs onthe'stove.
A further object resides in the provisin of al cabinet member of the type described which is comparatively simple in structure and which may be readily disassembled for cleaning. v
With the above and other objects andadvantages in view, the invention resides more A`3,5particularly in the novel combinatiom ar' rangement and formation of parts more particularly hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims. In the drawings: o Figure l is a perspective view of the cabinet with the stove compartment thereof closed.
Fig. 2' is a horizontal sectionalview taken through the stove compartment of the cabinet. q
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional `view showing the cover of the stove compartment closed, the open position of this cover being vindicated in dotted lines. `Referring now more particularly to the accompanying. drawings, `the cabinet is shown as comprisingside walls 5,a back wall 6 and a main partition wall 7 disposed in the upper portion of the cabinet and die viding it into a body compartment 8 havingshelves 9 for carrying dishes or other Specification of Letters Patent.v Patented Feb, 13, 191D?, y l I Applicatin med December 1e, 1915` eriai No. 67,114..
articles, a stove compartment, in `which is disposed preferably a gas stove 10 of a conventional small type. The-front ofthe body compartment is closed by suitablehinged doors 11 and the front of the stove compart` ment is closed by a detachable -panel 12.
The top of the partition 7 and the inner faces of the vertical walls4 are faced with sheets of asbestos 13, to prevent burning of the cabinet by heat given ofll by the'stove, and to provide a sanitary and easily cleaned structure a sheathing of metal 14 is disposed over the asbestos. The panel 12 isalsoprovided with a facing 15 of asbestos over which is disposed a metal plate.15 and to provide for'the securement of the panel 12, the ends of the metallic plate are extended past the ends of the panel 12 andare slidably disposed in grooves formed by yinwardly extending portions of forward corner uprights 16 of the side walls 5 and by inturned 'ed el portions 17 'of the adjacent metal sheathing l of the walls.
Thus the anel 12 maybe lifted from the cabinet an the stove compartment very readily cleaned. For concealing the stove .compartment when it is not in use, a top 18 is' provided lfor said compartment'andv is hinged to the back wall 6 and adapted to swing to 'a vertical position and to be nor- -mally held in such position by toggle links 19 connected therewith and with the side walls.
When in this vertical position the cover f ember serves as a back boardfor the stove to prevent damage caused by spattering .of food on the stove. The membercarries ad-` jacent its free edge a ledge or shelf 20 which serves to support articles -over the stove when -the member .is in vertical position. When themember is. swung to-closing position this ledge -20 extends between the stove andthe pan'el'12, it being noted that the stove is positioned rearwardly in the compartment to permit such disposal oflthe shelf and' also to permit 4ready manipula- For conveying fuel to the stove a tube 22 is extended from the stove through one of the side walls 5 to a suitable sourceof fuel. A simple and compact device is thus pro- 'vided whichfacil'itatesl normal cooking op"- erationsin conjunctionwith the stove disposed therein and-which may be arranged to entirely conceal the stovewhereby the entire `device may assume the appearance n'ection with \what is usually termed light house. keeping.
' TheA-stoveused in connection with the 'presentp'cabinet has been shown and described a'sfa gas stove, but it is not desired to limit the present invention in this connection asany' compact form of stove could be utilized and in many instancesy an electric stove --would lbe found preferable.1 In the use oan; electric stove, suitable feed wires wouldfext'end therefromvin the manner-'of I claim 1.A A cabinet including an'upper compartmentfcemprising front andlrear' and. side lwallfs'and a'bottom, a stove disposed in the reargportion of the compartment whereby a A espace isfformedbetween said stove and the j' wallffa cover for the compartment hinged to the rear wall and a shelf member- 'i extending laterally from the inner face of the cover and adapted to lie between the y stove and the fronti-iwall ofthe compartment upon folding the cover, whereby the stove is held against movement forwardly in the v com artment. A y
2. A cabinet includin an'upper compartment including side wa lshavlng inwardly directedfront portions, .a metallic sheathing ment, the ends of the sheathing adjacent said inward front portions of the side walls ,being directed inwardly to form grooves therewith, a front wall panel for the compartment, and a sheathing plate on thepanel having its 'edges extending beyond the ends grooves, anda cover for`the compartment.
In testimony that I- claim the foregoing I have hereunto set 'my hand at Milwaukee, in
State of Wis- 50 the county of Milwaukee and I consin, inthe presence f 'twg witnesses.
