Description

May 27, 1952 G. w. KAMlN ETAL RANGE AND RANGE TOP EXTENSION Filed March 30, 1950 geogge ,7 2 970w BY m hr mvryy Patented May 27, 1952 RANGE AND RANGE TOP EXTENSION George W. Kamin, Lombard, and Lawrence E. Wolske, Chicago, Ill., assignors to Cribben and Sexton Company, Chioa of Illinois go, 111., a corporation Application March 30, 1950, Serial No. 152,921
This invention relates to a range and range top extension. The invention is particularly useful in connection with a range having burners and heating elements in the range top thereof.
An object of the invention is to provide a range equipped with means ordinarily concealed for providing, when desired, a shelf or table top which preferably forms a continuation of the range top. Yet another object is to provide a range structure in which the burners of the range are utilized for warming a table top concealed therebelow and which may be moved outwardly to provide a warm surface in extension of the range top forsupporting hot dishes, foodcontaining vessels, etc. Other specific objects and advantages will appear as the specification proceeds.
The invention is shown in an illustrative embodiment by the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. l is a perspective view of a range embodying our invention; Fig. 2, a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing the auxiliary table top structure providing an extension of the range top; Fig. 3, a broken and sectional view on an enlarged scale showing the table top in extended position; Fig. 4, a view similar to Fig. 3 but showing the table top structure in collapsed and closed position; and Fig. 5, a front view in elevation of the folded table structure, the supporting parts being shown in vertical section.
In the illustration given, I designates a range frame which may be of any suitable type of construction. The range is shown equipped with a range top H in which are mounted burners l2. In the specific illustration given, the burner top H is provided with an integral upwardlyextending back splasher l3 and at its forward end has a downwardly-turned apron 14. Below the apron on one side is provided a table top compartment l provided with support flanges It. The compartment I5 is open at its front, but the table top structure which will be hereinafter described serves as a means for normally closing the front of the compartment when the parts are received within compartment IS.
The table top or extension structure may be of any suitable type or construction. In the illustration given, we provide a shelf or support member l1, formed of metal or other suitable material, the side flanges 18 being provided with elongated slot-s l9, as shown more clearly in Fig. 3. The shelf I1 is preferably provided at its rear with an upwardly-extending flange 20 which engages the upper flanges 2|, as shown in Fig. 5.
4 Claims. (01. 126-334) The flange 20 serves to prevent tilting of support structure l1.
Above the shelf or support I] is a table top 22 which preferably is supported so as to make the top surface thereof flush with the top surface of the range top H. Links 23 are pivotally connected to the table top 22 near its ends on both sides, and the links at their lower ends are provided with pins 24 received within the slots I 9 of the support I1.
Operation In the operation of the structure, when it is desired to provide a warmed shelf or table top for receiving hot dishes and food-holding containers, the user draws the support I! forwardly the.
and then swings the table top 22 upwardly to' the position shown in Fig. 3, the links 23 being drawn forwardly so as to firmly rest the table top against the front apron ll of the range top. The angle of the links 23 hold the table top securely in position.
When it is desired to remove the table top 22, the lower ends of the links 23 are swung inthe support I! and the two structures may be moved inwardly to the position shown in Fig. 4 where the forward ends of the members I! and 22 form a closure for the forward end of the compartment.
Instead of using a pair of shelves as illustrated, it will be understood that a single shelf may be employed and the single shelf may be swung to a position below, above, or substantially in line with the top of the table top. By moving the table top structure into a position below the burner, the heat from the burner is effective in warming the table top so that when it is swung outwardly to table top position, forming a continuation of the range top, the warm surface is highly useful for supporting food-containing dishes. Further, the warmed shelf I! below is useful for supporting dishes, etc. At the same time, these parts are readily moved to concealed and unobstructing position, when desired.
In the drawing, we have shown the compartment for receiving the support and table top opening at the front of the range. It will be understood that the compartment may open along the side of the range so as to bring the table top along the side rather than at the front of the range. Further, if desired, the compartment may be formed within the table top itself or in the skirt thereof rather than below the table top.
It will be understood that the pull-out work surface need not be flush with the regular top of the range, but may occupy positions below the top and above the top. For example, in the structure shown, the upper table top may be omitted.
While in the foregoing specification we have shown a single structure in considerable detail for the purpose of illustrating one embodiment of the invention, it will be understood that such details of structure may be varied widely by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of our invention.
We claim:
1. In a range top structure equipped with a range top having burners thereonand providing a compartment below said burners, a shelf slidably mounted in said compartment, a table top on said shelf, and link means connecting said shelf and table top for supporting said table top in elevated position when said shelf and table top are moved outwardly from said compartment whereby the top surface of said table top is substantially flush with the top surface of said range top.
2. In a range structure equipped with a range top having burners thereon and providing also a compartment below said burners, a support slidably mounted in said compartment, a table top carried by said support, said support being provided with longitudinal slots, and link members pivotally connected at their upper ends to said table top and equipped with pin at their lower ends received within said slots of said support.
3. In a range structure equipped with a range top having burners thereon and providing also a compartment below said burners, a support slideably mounted in said compartment and movable to a supporting position outside of said compartment, a. table top mounted upon said support and forming substantially an extension of said range top, and means carried-by'said support permitting iii) 4 said table top to be elevated into a position in which the top surface thereof is substantially flush with the top surface of said range top.
4. In a range structure equipped with a range top having burners thereon and providing a compartment below said burners, a support member slidably mounted in said compartment and movable to a supporting position outside of said compartment, a table top carried by said support member, and means connecting said support member and table top and adapted for permitting said table top to be elevated when said member is moved out of said compartment and further adapted to support said table top in elevated position.
