To all whom z't-may concern:
Be it known that I, lVAL'rnn M. PARSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Antigo, in the county of Langlade, State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Latches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,.such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it app'ertains to make and use the same.
This invention belongs to the class of door locks, and'has particular reference t a latch bolt operating mechanism.
The object of my invention is to construct a latch bolt operating mechanism of a simplified nature which may be employed either upon single or double doors, especially doors of a heavy construction, and in which the effectiveness of the latch is not decreased when the door or doors which it is intended to secure are separated from one another or from the door frame through shrinkage or settling of the building. It is well known that the ordinary latch bolt or its mechanism must frequently be set in order to re adjust the relationship between the latch bolt and the keeper, because, by reason of shrinkage or settling the distance between the door and its frame, or in the case of double doors, the distance between the doors becomes so great that the latch bolt cannot operatively engage the keeper. In order to avoid this disadvantage, my invention contemplates the provision of a latch bolt or a bolt operating mechanism in which an adjustment of the effective projection of the bolt may be accomplished in order that an increase in the distance between the bolt and its keeper may be compensated.
With the above primary object in view and others relating to the particular latch bolt operating mechanism which mayhereinafter appear, my invention will now be fully set forth and described, .referenceibeing had to the accompanying drawings.

Referring more particularly to the drawings 1 indicates a base plate or bottom of a casingwhich is adapted to be applied to a door, said base plate or casing having a side wall or flange 2, through which is formed the guide passage or slideway 3 for a latch bolt 4. Said latch bolt 4 is also slidably retained-by the retainer plate 5, and is provided at its projecting end with a suitably formed and beveled latch head 6. Extending through the base plate 1 and the bearing plates 7, secured to each side of the latter, is'a turn bolt 8, which has or may have, the operating loop or handle 9 formed integrally upon its outer end. The turn bolt 8 is threaded throughout the length of its inwardly projecting shank, and has threaded thereon 'a' link 10,'said link 10 be- 5 ing carried by the turn bolt 8 at an inter- ,mediate point, approximately the middle point, and is looked upon the turn bolt by means of the lock nuts 11 and 12, which are disposed against the inner and outer faces of the link 10. Also threaded upon the inner end or shank of the turn bolt 8 is the inner handle or loop 13. The lower end of the link 10 is pivotally connected to the rear end of the latch bolt 4, so that when the link 10 is rocked with the turn bolt, the latch bolt 4 will be reciprocated thereby. The opposite end of the link 10 is provided with a bearing opening 14 in which is journaled the end of a threaded bolt or bar 15, said bolt or bar 15, preferably being provided with an overturned headed portion 16 which lies within thebearing opening 14, a suitable and simple journal being thus provided. The free end of the bolt or bar 15 projects through an opening 17 which is provided in a bearing'plate 18 secured to the base plate 1, the opening 17 being formed in an upturned marginal flange 19 provided on the plate 18.
When theturn bolt is operated to rock the link 10, the bar l5may move forwardly throughthe-opening 17, but its rearward movement therethrough is limited by an adjusting nut 20 which bears against the face ofthe-flange 19, when the bolt or bar 15 stands in normal position. Threaded upon the bolt 15 is a coil spring 21 which is expanded between the flange' 19 and a stop washer 22 upon the bolt,a'second adjusting nut 23 being positioned behind the washer 22, and providingameans for regulating the tension of the spring 21. The operation of the above described mechanism is perfectly obvious from the foregoing description, but it should be noted that the operative parts are few and of such a simple nature that they may be comparatively heavily constructed so as to preclude the probability of frequent repair or undue wear. It should also'be particularly noted that the adjustable relation between the flange l9 and the bolt provides a means for regulating the extension of the latch head 6 beyond the side 2, thereby providing a mechanism for compensating the retreat of the marginal edge of the door from the frame or other element which carries the keeper, where such a retreat is due to the shrinkage of the door or the settling of the building.
That I claim as my invention is 1. A latch, comprising in combination, a latch bolt, a turn bolt, a link secured upon said turn bolt and pivotally connected to said latch bolt, a bar also pivotally connected to said link and means operated with said bar for limiting the movement of the latch bolt, said limiting means being adj ustable to regulate the amount of projection of the latch bolt.
2. A latch, comprising in combination, a latch bolt, a turn bolt, a link fixed upon said turn bolt and pivotally connected to said latch bolt, a bar also pivotally connected to said link, a bearing plate through which said bar is guided, a stop nut threaded upon said bar and bearing against said bearing plate to limit the movement of said bar, and a coil spring threaded upon said bar and tensioned to normally throw the latch bolt into latching position.
