COMBINATION PENCIL SHABPENER AND HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 13, 1917.
Application filed February 11, 1915. Serial No. 7,535.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES J. \Y. BRE- LAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spiro, in the county of Le Flore and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Pencil Sharpeners and Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a combination holder and sharpener principally for use in connection with pencils.
The main object of the invention is to provide a neat. attractive, simple, effective and easily and cheaply manufactured construction of sharpener or knife blade and a holder, preferably in the form of a clasp holder by means of which an article such as a pencil may be attached to the outer wall of a coat pocket.
Another object is to provide the article of but two separately made elements, namely a holder and a blade, having cooperating details of construction to connect them in operative relation.
With the foregoing and additional objects such as will hereinafter appear, the invention resides in the details of construction, ar-
rangement and combination of parts as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
One preferred embodiment is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is an elevation showing my improved article clasped to a pencil;
Fig. 2 is an elevation of my improved article with the knife blade extended;
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view on line of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary inverted plan View;
Fig. 5 is an end view and Fig. (5 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional iew taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 2.
Referring specifically to the drawings a pencil holder is shown as having an elongated substantially, arcwibe yieldable clasp portion 7 to receive a pencil 8 as seen in Fig 1. The longitudinal edges of the clasp 7 are cur\ed or rolled outwardly at 9 to facilitate pressure of the pencil 8 therebe tween in connecting it with the holder.
Also a )lcldablc clasp tongue 10 may extend from the clasp preferably slightly in wardly. The outer wall of a. coat on esi. pocket may be received and clasped intermediate tongue 10 and the pencil. It might be mentioned that all parts of the holder metal or other material.
are integral and that the holder is preferably made of bendable and yieldable spring This holder is to be considered as conventional.
In combination with the holder I employ a suitably shaped pencil sharpener which may be in the form of a knife blade 11 adapted to slide within and be concealed by the holder when connected to the pencil. (See Fig. 1.) Clasp 7' has a blade guide 12 integral therewith provided with laterally and inwardly extending bendable lugs 13 between and on which the blade 11 slides. Integral with the blade 11 is a transverseh disposed stud 14: which extends through an elongated slot 15 provided in the clasp 7. Beyond the slot 15, stud 14 terminates in a finger piece or nib 16, wider than the slot, so as to overlap the clasp'adjacent the sides of the slot. Guide 12, slot 15 and stud 14 and nib 1S mount the blade 11 for sliding movement and against displacement from the holder. 4
lVhen attached to a pencil, the clasp 7 receives the same and the blade 11 is retracted. Thus mounted, the holder may be clasped, as an ordinary clasp, to the outer wall of a coat or vest pocket by means of the tongue 10. Should it become necessary or desirable to sharpen the pencil, the device is detached from the pencil and the holder grasped by one hand and the blade projected by sliding movement imparted by engagement of a finger of the other hand with the nib 16. The end walls of slot 15 limit the movement of the stud and blade. The device may then be manipulated as an ordinary knife. After such use, the knife blade is retracted and the device again attached to the pencil.
The frictional con-' tact of the pencil against the knife blade andlugs 13 aided by the spring action of clasp 7 hold the blade against sliding movement.
Owing tothe fact that the nib 16 is shorter than the width of the slot 15 the nib understood that changeein the details of construction may be resorted to within the spirit and xcope oi the invention.
l Cltllltll 1. in a sharpener device. in combination with a supporting article, a holder mounted on said article being: inherently Flexible to trietionally engage the article, a cutter blade dispoxed between the holder and arti le. said holder abutting the article and being: tensioned to prese the blade against the article. said holder having an elongated slot. a stud integral with said blade at. its inner end and oi less \vi lth than the SlOlZ and passable through said slot and having a head to overlap the blade at the slot atter turning oi' the blade subsequent to passage of the stud through the slot. and lugs on the holder to prevent lateral displacement of the blade. said lugs being; bendable and integral with the holder and at one end thereof overlapping the blade at opposite longitudinal edges. said lugs and stud e):- tendin; in opposite directions laterally of the blade.
In a sharpener device. in combination with a supporting: article, a holder mounted on said article being inherently flexible to fric-tionally engage the article, a cutter blade disposed between the holder and article. said holder abutting the article and being tensioned to press the blade againstthe article. a head on said blade of a length corresponding to the width at the blade, :1 reduced stud extending at an angle to the blade and integral with the blade and head, said holder having an elongated slot through which the head is passable when the cutter blade is disposed at an angle to the holder, the cutter blade being turnable a lter passage of the head through the slot; so that the head will overlap the holder athe Sltl't, said holder at its active end having bendable lugs integral therewith. said bendable lugs being bent into overlapping engagement with the cutting blade at oppo site longitudinal edges.
in testimony whereof l aiiix'iny signature in presence at two witnesses.
CHARLES J. V. BRELAND.
