Description

H. BUDD. WASHBENCHQ APPLICATION FILED NOV. 26,-1915.
Patented Feb. 13, 1917.
' 11v MENTOR Ha/vyfil/dof HARRY BUDD, OF INDEPENDENCE, KANSAS.
WASHIBENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. is; 1917.
- Application filed November 26, 1915. SerialNo. eaeioj To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY BUDD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Independence, in the county of Montgomery and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wa-shbenches; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to makev and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters "and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. v My invention relates to wash benches and more particularly to a bench of that character comprising a central standard, and bench members which are adjustably mounted on the standard and adapted for supporting tubs or receptacles at opposite sidesof the standard, the principal object of the present invention being to provide an improved mounting for the bench members which will facilitate their application to and removal 5 from the center standard, and whereby the entire bench may be stabilized.
In accomplishing this objectI have provided improved details of structure, the preferred forms of which are illustrated in'the accompanying drawings, wherein: I
Figure I is a perspective view of a wash bench constructed according to -my invention.
Fig. II is a central vertical section of the 5 same, showing one of the bench members in functional position and the other member in shipping or stowing position.
Fig. III is a detail perspective view of a preferred form of latch for the bench leg.
Referring more in detail to the drawln s.
I designates a standard comprising the side posts 2-3, having enlarged base ends 4-4 for providing a substantial footing for I the standard, and having a wringer of any suitable type at its upper end. Fixed to the center posts 23 is a frame for supporting the inner ends of the bench members, preferably comprising a single metal strip 5,
I having end yokes 6 fitting over the outer faces of the post, and outwardly projecting rails 7 that extend between the posts and are spaced therefrom to form a support and fulcrum for the bench rail, as presently described, and carried by and extending between the posts, below the rails 7, is a rod 9 which serves to brace the post and as an anchor for the bench rails.
The bench members are not permanently connected with the center standard, but are ac adapted for cooperation therewith and each comprises a platform member and a leg member that is hingedly connected with the platform, the platform comprising the side rails 11 that are connected and spaced by 85 the rungs l2, and the leg members comprisingthe individual legs 13, which are connected with the platform rails 11 by hinges 14 and are beveled at their upperends so they may engage the under hinges of the bench rails and support the latter at the outer ends, the beveled engaging faces of the legs permitting the latter to incline outwardly andthereby brace the benches to preventtheir collapsing under the weight that '75 is placed on the platforms. I
The individual leg members 13 are spaced by rungs 15 and are held in functional position by latches 16 that are pivotally mounted on bolts or thelike 16 on'the platform rails 30 and have socketed ends 17 adapted to seat on the upper leg rungs15 to hold the leg members extended and prevent collapse of the benches, the said latches comprising locks 18 of any suitable.- construction for holding the latches in functional position. Fixed on the inner end of each of the platform rails 11 is a metal head 20, having a downwardly angling arm 21 that is adapted for lying along the inner face of an adjacent standard 99 post 2, and having an upwardly :facing hook 23 at its free end that is adapted for projection beneath the anchor rod 9 and for engagement with said rod from beneath, the angle of the arm being such that when the bench. is opened-and its outer end supported by the leg member, the inner end of the bench rail will seat on the standard rail and the hook will engage the anchor rod, to prevent the bench from displacement from the standard, and so that the rail 7 acts as a fulcrum to hold the hooks to the anchor rod when weight is placed on the bench.
While I have stated that the bench comprises the separate individual bench members, which are located on opposite sides of the standard, it is apparent thatthe bench members'are entirely independent of each other so that one may be used without the other.
Assuming the parts to be constructed and assembled as described, when the bench is not in use the legs of the individual bench members are folded against their platforms and the platform rails projected between the fulcrum rails 7 and the edges of the standard post, so that the said benches are nested in parallel relation to the standard in order that the entire device may occupy but a limited space.
When the bench is to be used, either or both of the individual bench members may be removed from the storage position, the leg parts unfolded and the hook ends of the platform rails projected beneath the anchor rod 9, so thatwhen the platform is lowered the inner ends of the rails will rest on the fulcrum rail 7 and be supported thereby while the outer ends of the rails are supported from the leg member. With the parts so arranged a tub or the like may be placed on and supported by the platforms the outer ends of which are supported respectively from the leg members 13 and on the adjacent fulcrum rails 7, it being apparent that while the fulcrum rail and the leg members carry the entire weight of the platform, the bench is held against longitudinal or vertical displacement of its inner end by the connection between the hooks 20 and the anchor rod on the standard.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. The combination with spaced standard members, of a bench support carried by said members, a bench having a platform portion adapted to rest on the support on said standard members, and anchoring means carried by the standard members, for engaging the inner end of the bench to retain the bench on the support.
2. The combination with spaced standard members, of a fulcrum rail carried by the standard members, a wash bench comprising a body portion, having inner ends adapted for seating on the fulcrum rail, and for projecting between the standard members, and means 011 the standard members for engagement by the inner ends of said body portion to support the said body portion on the fulcrum rail.
3. The combination with a standard, having a fulcrum rail spaced therefrom, of a rod carried by the standard, and a bench comprising platform rails adapted for support on the fulcrum rail at their inner ends and having hooks for engaging said rod.
4. The combination with a standard, having a rail spaced from the side thereof, and having a rod inset from said rail, of a bench comprising side rails adapted for support at their inner ends on the standard rail, and arm members on said bench having upwardly facing hooks adapted for taking under said rod.
5. The combination with a standard comprising spaced posts, of a fulcrum rail mounted on the post and spaced from the side edges thereof, a rod connecting the post below the upper edge of said rail, a bench comprising a platform member, having side rails, and having a leg member pivotally connected with the outer ends of said side rails, and arms on the inner ends of said side rails, adapted for projection between the posts, and having upwardly facing hooks at their ends, adapted for engaging said rod from beneath.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
