CAMP-TOILET,
soaoar.
Specification of Letters Patent. I
Patented June 10, 1919.-
Application filed October 22, 1917. Serial No. 197,825.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. VVITTMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Camp-Toilets; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to camp toilets and has for its principal object to provide a sanitary, portable toilet stool which may be conveniently carried by automobile tourists, or others, and may be easily and quickly set up and knocked down upon making or breaking camp. 1
In accomplishing this object, I have provided improved details of structure, the preferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure I is a perspective view of a camp toilet embodying my invention, illustrating its connection with a supporting standard and its inclosure in a portable tent.
Fig. II is an inverted perspective view of a stool, particularly illustrating its sanitary lining.
Fig. 111 is a top perspective view of the Fig. IV is an enlarged elevational section of part of the stool, particularly illustrating the anchor bar. I
Fig. V is a detail perspective view of the anchor bar.
Referring more in detail to the drawings:
1 designates a front support and 2 a seat member forming the body of a toilet stool, the said members being connected by hinges 3 at their upper and forward edges in order that they may fold against each other to form a compact compactly for convenient transport and storage, each member being preferably formed from a single board or sheet of material and the seat member 2 provided with any suitable number of openings 4.
The top board 2 is, in the preferred form, provided with two openings 4, as this arrangement allows the placement of the openings at opposite sides of a central support and avoids any interference by said support body that may be arranged with the clearance that is desirable beneath the seat.
The front board 1 is provided along its upper edge and at the center of the board, with a downset slot 5 for receiving an anchor and seat supporting bar 6, having a notch 7 at its rear upper corner for receiving a batten 8 that is suspended from the rear edge of the seat board 2, and provided at its forward end with a loop strap 9 through which a suitable tie member 10 may be projected to attach the anchor bar to any suitable standard when the stool is set up; the anchor bar being rigidly connected with the front board 1, when the parts are assembled, by a pin 11 that is projected through the eyes 12 of the hinge members 13-13 on the front and under edge of the front board 1 and anchor bar 6 respectively. The stool comprises merely the front and top board, as ends and a back are undesirable for either sanitation or support in a temporary toilet. To further render the stool sanitary, I preferably provide the front board'l with a re movable sheet 14 of paper or other suitable material, which may be temporarily attached to the stool by locating the upper edge of the sheet between the upper edge of the front board 1 and the bottom of the seat member 2 when the parts are being set up, to clamp the upper edge of the sheet therebetween; the lower edge of the sheet being turned under the bottom of the front board and attached thereto by tacks or the like 15.
It is apparent that with this arrangement the sheet 1 1 may be attached to the front part of the stool before it erected and that when the stool is taken down for transportation the sheet may be removed, to be replaced by a fresh one when the toilet is again put to use.
While the complete stool comprises the hingedly connected front board. and seat, the anchor bar 6 and tie member 10, these parts may be supplemented by a tent 15 of any suitable construction and which may be erected on a tree or other standard 16, to which the front end of the anchor bar is attached, and pinned securely at its corners.
The complete toilet, including the seat, may be carried in a compact bundle in an automobile or wagon and when intended for use may be assembled by arranging the front support and seat at a right angle to each other and projecting the anchor bar through the slot 5 in the upper edge of the front is then projected through the eyes 12 of the,
hinge member 13-18 on the front member 1 and anchor bar respectively, and the front end of the anchor bar attached to a tree or other standard by like.
Before the anchor bar is attached to its standard, the sanitary lining 1,4, which may comprise several thicknesses of paper or other material, is placed on the front board by projecting the upper edge of the sheet between the meeting surfaces of the front 1 and seat 2 and the lower edge of the sheet turned under the bottom of the supporting front board and tacked to the front face thereof. With the stool anchored to the tree, it is supported from the front board 1 and the latter is held from tipping by its anchorage to the tree or other standard, the anchor bar extending beneath the seat to form. a support therefor, although the principal Weight would naturally be located on the front of the seat over the edge of the front board.
The toilet, when so constructed, may be used during the camping periodand when the camp is broken may be easily and quickly taken down by disconnecting the anchor bar from tree or standard and the stoolremoved in a body from its point of use. The anchor bar may then be disconnected from the stool body and before the seat is folded onto the front board, the upper edge of the sanitary sheet 14 removed from between the stool members and detached from the front board by removing sheet therefrom.
With the sanitary sheet remo d, the seat may be folded onto the front board and the parts assembled in portable relation and stored conveniently within the vehicle or elsewhere.
It apparent, therefore, that the structure not only affords a compact, convenient device for the use intended, but, by the addition of the sanitary sheet, provides aclean and sanitary stool which may be carried conveniently and comfortably with other camp equipment.
Having thus described my invention, what Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, my-addressing the Commissioner means of a rope or the the tacks or tearing the underlying the seat member and projecting through the support.
2. A portable toilet comprising a seat member, a front board supporting the seat member from the forward edge thereof and an anchor bar underlying the seat member and extended through, the front board.
3. A portable toilet comprising a seat member, a front board supporting the seat member from the forward edge thereof, an anchor bar underlying the seat member and extended through the front board, and means temporarily connecting the front board and anchor bar.
4. A portable toilet comprising a seat membena front board. supporting the seat memberfromthe forward edge thereof, an anchor bar underlying the seat member and extended through the frontboard, eye members. on the front board and anchor bar, and a pin .remova'b-ly located insaid eye members.
5. A. portable toilet comprising a seat member, av front board supporting the seat member from the forward edge thereof, an anchor bar underlying the seat member and extended through the front board, and means at the front end of the anchor bar for connecting the bar with an independent body.
6. In a, portable toilet, collapsible seat andfront members, and a lining having its upper edge clamped between said members and its lower edge turned beneath and attached to said front member, to protect the inner surface of said member.. v
7. In a device of the class described, a top member, a front supporting member hinged thereto, and an anchor bar carried by the top member having means for attachment to a support.
8. In a device of the class described, atop member, a frontsupporting member hinged thereto, and a transversely projecting anchor bar, carried by the top member having means for attachment to a support.
In testimony whereof I 'aflix my signature.
