HENRY KOLLMEYER, OF CONCORDIA. MISSOURI.
DOOR-LOCK.
1 215,286. Specificati Application filed November 15, 1916. Serial No. 131,520.
To (/ZZ @1171 am it may concern:
3e it known that I, IIENRY KoLLMEYnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at ('oneordia. in the eountv of Lafayette and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to locks In marrying out my invention it is my purpose to produce an extremely simple but thoroughly etl'ective locking means, wherein the locking bolt will be positively held in either its locking or unlocking position.
It is also my purpose to produce a locking means including a longitudinally movable bolt provided with a toothed surface that is engaged by teeth disposed for a determined distance upon the periphery of a wheel that is journaled in the lock casing, and whereby the end tooth of the wheel contacting between the end teeth of the bolt, when the. bolt is moved in either direction will halt the longitudinal movement of the said bolt, and also to connect the door spindle to, the said wheel, and to arrange upon said-spindle spring means which will exert a pressure to assist in maintaining the locking bolt in either its looking or unlocking position.
lVith the above and-other objects in view the improvement resides in the construction. combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended Claim. v
In the drawings:
Figure l. is a view illustrating a. door' having a locking means constructed in ac-.
cordance with the present invention,
Fig. 2 is a sectional view approximately on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a sectional view approximately on the line 33 of Fig. 2,
Fig. 4 is a similar sectional View but illustrating the locking bolt in its retracted position, I
Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view approximately on the line 55 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 6 is a perspective View of the bolt. While my device is primarily adapted for use in latching or locking barn or similar doors, it is to be understood that the same ma y be employed with equal efliciency upon any other construction of swinging doors.
Referring now to the drawings in detail Patented Feb. e, e.
the numeral 1 designates a swinging door and 2 the casing or member against which the door abuts. hecured to the door l'is the casing 23 of the locking member which is constructed in :u-cordance with the present invention. and eonneetwl with the abutment 2 for the said door is the keeper member -l for the sliding bolt of the. locking means. The casing in the construction illustrated by the drawings is of a substantially rectangular formation and has its inner plate formed adjacent its corner with lugs 5, the said lugs having openings through which pass the securing elements 6. The casing has one of its ends provided with an opening through which one end of the slidable bolt 7 is adapted to be projected. The. bolt 7 comprises preferably a substantially reetangular member and has one of its edges formed with an angularly arranged longitudinally disposed plate 8 which is toothed, as at 9. The bolt 7, for the major portion of the length thereof at all times received within the casing 3. is centrally provided with a longitudinally extending slot 10. The numeral 11 designates a wheel member that has its periphery for a certain distance provided with teeth 12, and the said teeth are adapted to engage between the teeth 9 upon the rack plate 8 of the bolt 7, whereby, when the wheel is rotated, to slide the bolt longitudinally to either locking or unlocking position. it being understood that when the bolt is in unlocking position, the engaging end thereof will be disposed llush with one of the ends of the casing 23 and of course when the bolt is projected the same will be re eived in the keeper 'l-.
The knob spindle is indicated by the numeral 13.and to this spindle the wheel 11 is centrally connected, the said spindle pass ing through bearing openings in the outer and inner plates of the casing, and is, of
formed with knobs or handles Id l-l, one.
of the said knobs being arrauged,-of course. to the opposite. sides of the door 1. The
s )indle 1?, at the iortion thereof arran ed l l to within the casing 3 and preferably outward of its connection with the wheel 11 is cranked, as at 15, whereby to receive one end of a convolute spring 16, the other'end of said spring being secured upon a suitable ofl'set member or lug 17 arranged transversely in. the casing 3 and serving as an additional means for retaining the outer plate of the casing in proper position with relation'to the flanged edge of the inner plate. By reference to the drawings it will be noted that the cranked portion of the spindle is so disposed as to be beyond the. vertical center when the bolt 7 is in its locking and when the said bolt 7 is in its unlocking position. and by this arrangement it will be apparcntthat the accidental actuation ot' the boltwill be etl'eetively prevented.
The construction is simple, the device thought that the advantages and operation of the same will be fully understood.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
In a locking means, a slotted toothed bolt, :1 toothed wheel co-engaging with the teeth of the bolt. a knob spindle connected to the toothed wheel and passing through the slot in the bolt, said spindle having a cranked portion, spring means connected with the said crank. and the said crank being so disposed as to be oti' of the vertical center when the bolt is moved to its looking or to its unlocking position.
In testimony whereof I atlix my signature.
HENRY KOLLMEYER.
