PHOTOGRAPH-GASE.
Application filed July 24, 1316.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE E. McCon- MACK, a citizen of the United States, resid ing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Photograph-Cases, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to ornamental cases adapted to accommodate and display photographs.
Objects of my invention are to permit a simultaneous display of a plurality of photographs; to enable this to be done in a minimum of space so that when the case is employed as a locket or otherwise the contour of the structure will be extremely thin; to facilitate the substitution of photographs, and to attain the objects in a simple, strong, and inexpensive structure.
To the above ends essentially my invention consists in such parts and combinations of parts as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification Figure 1 is a perspective view of my case in open position, Figs. 2 and 3, enlarged perspective views of the box and holder respectively, Fig. l a central longitudinal section, still further enlarged, of the box, holder, and contents, and Fig. 5, a perspective view of the case in closed position.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the views.
In detail my case comprises two lids A. and B having respectively hinge sleeves a and 1) upon a pintle C which form a hinge to connect the adjacent ends of the lids. The lids have upon their inner margins pe ripheral shoulders (Z and 6 respectively which form depressions or seats 7 and 9 respectively in the lids.
Pivotally mounted in the case between the lids is a box H. In detail this box is constructed of thin metal and is oblong and thin. in contour, having face walls '5 and 9' provided with display openings 70 and Z, together with side walls m and a. Fixed by solder or otherwise to the inner ends of the face walls are hinge sleeves O which loosely engage the pintle. The member H is hollow and has an open outer end to permit insertion of a holder. closed the member H is seated in the depressions f and f/ so that the entire structure is very thin.
The member P which holds the photogra iihs is of such dimensions as to admit the same to be slidably inserted into or removed from the box H at its open end. 'l here is however sufficient frictional contact of the parts to prevent accidental escape of the holder from the box.
The holder includes a metal binding member Q bent up from a single piece of thin metal into a long fiat head or cap 9 with longitudinally disposed lateral shoulders q and slightly projecting ends 9 Below the shoulders 11 are parallel binding strips 9 which embrace the ends of flexible leaves R of celluloid, isinglass or other transparent material. The leaves are fixed between the binding strips 9 by prick points 1" or otherwise.
Between the transparent leaves or covers are inserted, one or more preferably two, flexible photographs S and T with their blank faces back to back so that their printed faces are exposed through the leaves R at points to be visible through the openings 70 and Z in the box. These photographs are retained by friction and are capable of ready substitution.
To assemble the parts the photos are first manually inserted between the leaves R and then the entire member P is slid into the box H through its open end until the shoulders q and 9 rest upon the ends of the member H. In this position the portion 9 cmnpletes the margin of the box and corn ceals the fact that it is not an integral part of the member H. During the insertion of the holder, the strips 9 assist in guiding and strengthening the leaves B. To remove the holder a finger nail or knife blade may be inserted beneath a shoulder g. A sharp implement may thus be employed because it i s guarded from the leaves R by the metal strips 9 It will be observed that the member H has capacity to display two oppositely disposed photographs or printed leaves at the same time; further that the complete case is very thin.
The free ends of the lids are provided with a fastener consisting of a ball a on the end of lid A, adapted to register in a marginal cavity 1: in the lid B. When the case is used as a pendant or locket, an attaching ring w is fixed to the end of lid 13.
1. A case of the type set forth, comprising a pair of hinged lids forming av case, a box provided with an open end secured to the hinge of the lids and provided with display openings in its walls, transparent leaves slidably mounted in the box and covering the openings, and means closing the open end of the box for binding the leaves.
2. A case of the type set forth, comprising a pair of hinged lids forming a case, a
box secured to the hinge of the lids provided with display openings, a binding member detachably fitted in and having means for closing the end of'the box, and transparent leaves attached to the binding member.
covering the openings.
3. A-case of the type set forth, comprising a pair of hinged lids forming a case,
'a box attached to the hinge of the lid provided with display openings in its sides and having an open end, transparent leaves in the box in contact with the sides and covering the openings, binding strips embracing the leaves, and a cap upon the strips closing the open end of the box.
4. A case of the type set forth, comprising a pair of hinged lids forming a case, a box with an open end' secured to the hinge of the lids and provided with display openings in its walls, transparent leaves slidably mounted in the box and covering the openings, and binding strips uniting the leaves. In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
