Speccation of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 23, i917 Application filed June 10, 1916. Serial No. 162,929.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, Meer A. OWENS, a citizen of the United States, residing at lWalnut Hill, in the county of Marion and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tumbler-Supports, of which the following is a specification..
This invention relates to improvements in tumbler supports and has for its chief characteristic to provide a device of this character for supporting the tumbler in inverted position whereby the contents of the tumbler may readily drain and thus keep the tumbler in a sanitary condition at all times.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the above described character which is covered with soft material such as rubber or the like whereby the accidental breaking of the tumbler will be prevented.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which contains the desirable features of simplicity, durability and eiiiciency, and furthermore a device which may be manufactured at a nominal cost.
@ther objects of the invention will appear as the specification is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a perspective view of my device showing a tumbler applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detailed view of the coil which engages the tumbler.
Referring to the drawings in detail, my invention comprises a single length of rigid wire which is preferably formed of steel and which is bent intermediate its ends to resemble a U, the parallel portions of which are indicated as at l and 2 respectively, while the horizontal portion or connecting portion is indicated as at 3. In this instance the parallel portion l is relatively shorter than the portion 2 and has its free end bent upon itself to provide the angular-ly disposed eye 1l, the latter being adapted to receive a suitable fastening member whereby the support may be secured in vertical position upon a wall. rlhe portion 2 as previously stated is relatively longer than the portion l and has its upper end bent at right angles as at 5, the free extremity of which is coiled upon itself as at 6, the end of the coil engaging the angular bent portion 5 whereby the coil will remain in rigid position. lt will be noted that the coil 6 is arranged coiicentrically of the portion 2 and is disposed in a horizontal plane to support the tumbler in a vertical inverted position as is clearly shown in F ig. l of the drawings.
To prevent the coil from contacting with the bottom of the tumbler and the subsequent breaking of the tumbler, l have provided the angular bent portion 5 and the coil 6 with a tubing of rubber 7 or other soft material so that when the glass is placed upon the support, the inner face of the bottom of the tumbler will engage the surface of the tubing 7 and thereby prevent the accidental breaking of the former.
As shown in Fig. l the support is arranged in vertical position by means of a suitable fastening member which is passed through the eye e whereby the parallel portion 2 will be arranged in spaced relation to the wall or other supporting member to which the device is attached, the coil 6 being disposed in a horizontal plane. rlhe glass is inverted and applied to the parallel portion 2, the bottom of the glass engaging the coil whereby the tumbler will be supported in vertical inverted position to permit the ready draining of the contents and thus producing a tumbler which is thoroughly sanitary at all times.
lf it is so desired the coil 6 may be formed of resilient wire whereby the coil be bent to assume a diameter of dierent proportions so as to accommodate tumblers having bottoms of various diameters. lhen using the tumbler support invthis manner, the outer periphery of the coil 6 is adapted to engage the inner periphery of the tumbler and thereby prevent the lateral movement of the same and consequent breaking of the tumbler as will be understood.
lt is thought from the foregoing taken in connection with the accompanying drawings that the construction and operation of my device will be apparent to those skilled in the art without further description, that minor changes in the size, shape and proportion and minor details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is A tumbler support formed from a single piece of wire and comprising a vertical portion formed With lan -eye at its upper end, a eye of the first mentioned vertical portion horizontal portion, a second Vertical portion and being adapted for Contact With the inparallel to and spaced from said iirst menside bottom of the tumbler to support the l@ tioned vertical portion by means of the horisaid tumbler in an inverted position.
5 zontal portion and a Coil formed upon said In testimony whereof aiiix my signature.
second Vertical portion and at right angles thereto, said coil being on a plane above the MACY A. UWENS.
