NUT-CRACKING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
.Patented Jan. 23, 1917.
To aZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK LEU, a citizen of the United States, residing at Long Island City, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Nut- Cracking Machines; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to nut cracking machines and it has for an object to provide a machine for removing the kernel from a nut having a very thick and hard shell.
A further object of this invention is to provide an improved type or' cutter which may be interchangeably carried by said machine to afford a maximum of cutting edge from a single cutter.
Further objects will be apparent from the following specification, appended claims and drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the complete machine, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of parts of the machine, showingv one of the halves removed, Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view as on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, Fig. l is a similar view as on the line Ll`4 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a bottom view, showing parts in section of the head of the machine.
Referring to the drawings, 10 indicates a frame having the legs 11, 12 and 13, and this frame includes a head formed of the halves 1st and 15. The legs are disposed so as to form a tripod for the head and are spread at the lower ends to ai'ord suliicient base to prevent tilting of the machine when in operation. rThe members 14: and 15 are recessed as at 16 and 17 respectively, and have the shoulders 18 and 19 formed therein, between which shoulders, an extension 20 from the leg 13 is clamped. rlhe halves 14: and 15 and extension 20 are rigidly held together by bolts 21, 22 and 23. rThe forward ends of the halves 14 and 15 terminate in a jaw 21 of which the extension from the member lll has an overlapping edge 25 which its in a recessed portion of the member 15 and this overlapping edge 25 forms a support for a cutter which is interchangeably carried thereby in having lugs 26 and a screw 27 to engage opposite faces of a cutter 2 8 which is triangular in cross section and this cutter has each of its edges sharpened so that each edge may in turn be used in its capacity.
A swinging jaw 29 which has its rear end bifurcated as at 3S is pivotally mounted upon the bolt 23 and the opposite sides of the extension 20 and the forward end et this jaw terminates in a flat surface upon which lugs 31 are formed to co-act with a screw 39 in holding a cutter 32 which is triangular in cross section properly disposed under the cutter 28.
The legs 11 and 12 have bearings formed thereon between which thelever 33 is pivoted as at 34E and this lever has links 35 pivoted thereto as at 36 upon the pin passing through the upper end of said lever and said links. The links 35 are also pivotally connected as by the pin 37 to the jaw 29. rThis connection between the lever 33 and jaw 29 together with the particular mounting for said lever forms a toggle for exerting the sutlicient force on the cutters 28 and 32 to break .the hard shell of the nut and to prevent continued movement of the lever 33, lugs 40 are formed on the upper end of said lever which engage the links 35 in the limit of movement in one direction of this lever. To facilitate in the operation of said lever, a
treadle or foot piece 41 is attached to the lower end thereof.

I claim 1. 1n a device of the class described, a frame, legs formed on said frame presenting a tripod, a head carried by said legs, said head being formed of halves, each of said halves being recessed, shoulders formed by said recesses, an extension from one of said legs for attachment between said shoulders, a plurality of bolts for securing said halves and extension in fixed relation, a j aw formed by forward extensions of said halves, a cutter of triangular cross section detachably carried by said jaw, a swinging jaw pivotallv mounted on one of said bolts, a cutter of triangular cross section detachably carried by said swinging jaw, and a lever pivoted between two of the legs of said frame for actuating said swinging jaw.

3. ln a device of the class described, coacting jaws having relatively flat faces, spaced lugs formed on said faces, said lugs being undercut, a screw detachably carried by each of said jaw members, and an interchangeable cutter carrie'd byeach jaw member between said lugs and screw.
