IMPROVEMENT lN SHOE-QUARTERS, &c.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL BABBITT, of Brazil, in the county of Clay and in the State of Indiana, have invented an Improvement in Shoes and do hereby declare that the following description, taken in'eonneetion with the accompanying drawing hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specification of the same, wherein I have set forth the nature and principles of my said improvement by which my invention may be distinguished from others of a similar class, together with such parts as I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent.
My invention relates to the manufacture of 1 shoes; and the nature thereof con sists in certain quarters of the shoe at the rear thereof by means of a seam, they are formed of one piece of leather and crimped by a machine to form the line a b. After being thus crimped the inner sides are secured in position by means of the stays c c, which are sewed securely on either side of the center of the crimp. 'lhese stays prevent the drawing out of the crimp, and are of the form shown in the figure. They form also an opening to receive the seam of the lining and keep it perfectly smooth.
By this construction the quarter of the shoe may be cut in as many pieces as desired, thereby effecting a great saving of the stock in cutting.
