CHARLES W. GREEN, OF PONTIAC, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN THE MANUFACTURE OF SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,691, dated September 9, 1873 application filed. September 2, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. GREEN, of Pontiac, in the county of Oakland and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Manufacture of Shoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which makes part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a shoe embracing my improvements. Fig. 2
represents the form in which the shoe is cut from the leather before being crimped.
My invention relates to the manufacture of that class of shoes which are laced in front; and. it consists in so cutting the leather that the entire upper is formed of a single piece, crimped at the back and front at one and the same operation, and joined on the side at or about the center of the quarter or back of the shoe, whereby a great saving of leather and labor in fitting the upper is effected, as will be more fully set forth.
In the drawing, A represents the front of the shoe, which is ordinarily attached to the quarter. In this case it forms part of the continuous upper, which latter extends on the one side, as shown at B, from said front portion, to and around the heel of the shoe, to a point, a, and on the other side, as shown at C, it extends from said front portion to said point a, where the contiguous ends of the quarter are joined by a vertical seam at or about the middle of one side of the back of the shoe, as clearly shown in the drawing.
It has been practically demonstrated that a great saving is effected in cutting the upper of a shoe of this class in the manner described.
Ordinarily, the leather is cut to produce the necessary curvatures in the back and front portions of a shoe, thereby leaving in the next out small pieces, which are useless and are lost.
By my method the skin is so used as that the required curvatures are provided by the out, and by stretching the leather by crimping, as described; and by so doing we are enabled to produce the shoe-upper from a smaller surface of leather than can be done by the ordinary method.
When the upper is thus produced, the front thereof is slit so as to be laced, as described and shown.
Having described my invention, I claim- As a new article of manufacture, a shoe having its upper made from a single piece of leather, cut in the manner shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and crimped at front and rear, so that only one seam is required, and that at about the middle of the side of one quarter of the shoe, as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name.
. CHARLES W. GREEN.
