Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.v
LOTON L. DEMING, ANDREW J. DEMLNGWAND RINALDO ALDEN, OF ERIE, PA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BED-BOTTOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,279, dated November 28, 1871.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, LoToN L. DEMnvG, AN- DREW J. DEMING., and RrNALno ALDEN, of Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Adjustable Bed-Bottom; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing which forms part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The object of our invention is to provide a bedbottom that shall be adjustable-that is, one that can be raised and lowered at the head-so as to adjust it to the wants of invalids. The nature of our invention consists in jointing a bed-bottom near the head of the same, and providing means whereby the head may be raised to any desired degree in an easy and noiseless manner, so as to accommodate invalids and allow them to change their position without handling them,
and without disturbing them.
The accompanying drawing represents our invention, as follows: Figure l shows a top view of one of our bed-bottoms. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a View of the hoisting apparatus, and Fig. f1 is a view of the ratchet used for holding the elevated portion in any position.
The following are the several parts of our invention as represented and designated by the letters of reference:
A A A is the frame of the bed-bottom. B B B is the adjustable portion of the bed-bottom. The hoisting apparatus consists of the parts following: E is a rockingshaft. D D are arms extendingtherefrom. C (l are friction-rollers placed in the ends of the lifting-arms D D. F is the hoisting lever, on the bed-side of which is apawl, G. J is a ratchet set in the frame-work A.
The following is a description of the mode of constructing our invention: The whole frame A A A is first constructed, and the slats I I I,
Sto., are inserted. rIhe adjustable frame is then treme ends. In one side of the frame A, over the shaft E, is placed the ratchet J. The lever F is then set onto the end of the rock-shaft E. The arms D D lie under the adjustable frame B B B.
In Vorder to raise the adjustable frame B B B the operator lifts on the lever F. This raises the arms D D, which, being under the frame B B B, lift the same to any desired angle. The frictionwheels C (l roll along the under side of the frame B B B, and thus the operation of lifting is perfectly noiseless and without jerking or jarring. When it is elevated to the angle desired the lever is pressed in setting the pawl G into the ratchet J, thus holding it in position. To lower it again the pawl is removed, and by holding firmly to the lever the patient is easily placed back to the horizontal position.
V'e do not claim as new the springs or slats or any arrangement of the same, nor the jointed bed herein described; but
What we do claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
The shaft with arms extending therefrom, and friction-rollers placed in the ends of the saine, as set forth, in combination with the lever and ratchet, when the saine are arranged as and for the purposes set forth.
LOTGN L. DEMLNG. ANDREW J. DEMING. RINALDO ALDEN.
