To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARRY H. SonU'rz, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Los Lunas, in the county of Valenciag and State of New Mexico, have invented new and Improved Plug-Tobacco Cutter, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

Objects of my invention are to provide a cutter that may be cheaply produced in compact form to include a base plate having an ample area to firmly support thereon a piece of plug tobacco, and also a knife especially adapted to cut a piece from the plug of tobacco.

The details of construction, arrangement, and operation of the parts constituting my improved cutter are as hereinafter described.

Other objects and advantages of my im proved device will be understood from the specific description following.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cutter embodying my invention, the knife being shown raised; Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the cutter showing the same in the lowered position after severing a piece from the tobacco plug; Fig. 3 is a transverse ver' tical section on the line 33, Fig. 2, showing a tobacco plug in position to be cut; and Fig. 4 is a similar view with the tobacco plug removed.

In producing a cutter in accordance with my invention, a flat base plate 10, of sheet metal, is provided, adapted to alford ample 40surface on the upper side thereof to receive and support a piece of plug tobacco A. The

base is made generally of oblong form and may have the forward-end thereof rounded as at 10*. One corner of the plate 10 is upturned to provide an upstanding hinge lug 11 to which the cutter, designated generally by the numeral 12, is pivoted by a rivet 18, or the like, so that the cutter may swing in a vertical plane toward and from the base plate 10.

The position of the lug 11 is such as to cause the knife 14 to swing in a vertical planeat such a distance from the adjacent longitudinal edge of the base 10 as to sever a small piece a, Fig. 2, from the plug A at the end, when the knife is brought down parallel with the base 10.

The forward or free end of the knife 14 is bent laterally as at 16 beneath the back plate 15, inward from the free end of the latter so as to brace and strengthen said back plate and serve also as a stop for the cutter when pressed down. In using the device, pressure is applied to the broad back plate 15, thus forcing the knife down through the tobacco plug and severing a piece of the same.

It will be observed more particularly from Fig. 4 that the lateral back member 15, when the cutter is in the lowered position, eX- tends beyond or overhangs the adjacent edge of the base plate 10, by reason of which arrangement the said edge of the base plate constitutes a gage for the plug and when the knife is lowered and the piece a severed the back plate will project sufficiently beyond the plug to be engaged by the fingers, and the knife thus be conveniently raised.

Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. An improved cutter for plug tobacco comprising a flat metal base, one corner of the same being upturned and constituting an upstanding hinge lug, an angle iron outter consisting of a vertical knife member and a lateral back member formed integrally, the said knife member being pivoted at one end to said lug and its free end bent laterally beneath the back member and inward from the free end of the knife, as and for the purpose specified.
