Description

Oct. 19,1926. I
- L. R. WHITNEY CAN OPENER Filed May 8. 1926 Patented Got. 19, 1926.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOGAN R. WHITNEY, 0F LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNOR TO WHITNEY-JARVIS COMPANY, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY, A CORPORATION OF KENTUCKY.
CAN OPENER.
Application filed May 8,
This invention relates to an improved device to be used in combination with a can opener for the purpose of forming an open ing in a canto receive the cutting blade of a can opener.
The primary object of this invention is to produce a device which can readily and easily be used in conjunction with a can opener.
The chief novelty lies in the simplicity of operation.
Other novelty lies in the means whereby two distinct operations which would ordinarily require two tools is performed with a single tool.
Further novelty will be shown in the draw ings and specification.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cylindrical metal can with the can opener in position for making the initialcut in the can and the dotted lines show the position of the opener after the initial out has been made.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of a cyl1ndrical metal can with the opener in position ready to cut the top of can off. Dotted lines show the position of opener after the first cut with the knife edge has been made.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary detail illustrating the portion of the puncturing blade and guard.
Referring to the details of the drawings, numeral 1 designates a cylindrical container, having a top 2, forming a lip 3. In con junction with the cylindrical container is a can opener 4, having a head 5, with a flange 6 at right angles to a cutter blade 8. At one end of cutter blade 8 is a cutter point 7. At the other end the cutter blade drops down forming a shoulder 9 to knife edge 10. Directly beneath the knife edge 10 is a projection 11 parallel to knife edge 10 which acts as a fulcrum against the container when the knife edge is in operation.
As actually used, the flange -6 will be placed over lip 3 so that cutter point 7 will come in contact with the side of cylindrical container 1. The handle of can opener 4 will then be revolved in a counter clock- 1926. Serial No. 107,713.
wise direction to assume the dotted position shown in Figure 1. This operation forces the cutter point 7 into the container and as this movement is continued cutter blade 8 will be forced against the side of container 1, thus making an opening the length of cutinto a new position, this new position being at the end of the out just made and the opener assumes the positionas shown in solid lines in Figure 2. The cutting stroke is repeated until the side of the container has been comletely cut.
Having described my invention what I claim is:
1. A can opener comprising a plate of determined distance below the top of and outside of said can.
2. A can opener set forth in claim 1 havinga cutting blade extending across the end of said plate, a gauge member stamped from said plate at right angles thereto and on the side opposite to the said guard, said gauge member having a gauging edge spaced at the a same distance from said cutting blade as the gauging edge on said guard member is spaced from said puncturing blade.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
LOGAN R. WHITNEY.
