Be it known that I, NAPOLEON SAVARIA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Implements for Opening Boxes or the Like, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view showing the present implement in use. Fig. 2 is a view showing the implement in end elevation and a box in section. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal elevation of the device, partlyin section. Fig. l is a top plan view, partly in section; and Fig. 5 is a view of the general character of Fig. 3, said view illustrating a modification.

My invention relates to implements for opening boxes and the like, my objects being to provide a simple and cheap construction which can be readily operated and neatly performs its work.

To these ends and also to improve generally upon devices of the character indicated my invention consists in the various matters hereinafter described and claimed.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, 1 represents the head of the device, said head being provided with an angularlyextending shank 2, which is seen red to a suitable handle 3, the handle extending at an angle to the head in order to afford room for the hand when the device is in use, as illustrated in Fig. l. The head is provided with guideplates 4:, which extend at an angle to each other, this angle being preferably a right angle, and at the apex of the angle the head is provided with a longitudinal slot 5, which extends through said head and opens at the apex of the said angle. A cutter-blade (5 rests in said slot and projects through the same, said blade being adj ustably secured in position. Preferably one of the walls against which the cutter-blade bears is provided with a groove 7 whereby said wall is given a broken surface, and a set-screw 8, extending through the opposite wall of the head, ongages said cutter-blade at a point opposite the groove 7, thus tending to slightly bend the cutter-blade at the point of said groove and firmly supporting said blade in position. The cutting edge 9 of the blade extends obliquely to the planes including the guideplates and also to the meeting line 10 of said plates, whereby a shearing cut is produced as the implement is drawn across the body desired to be severed.

Many packages-as, for example, those containing photographic plates-are sealed by pasting a strip of paper a across the space between adjacent walls of the package, and the present device is especially designed for cutting such sealing-paper in the line of such space. By applying the device to the angle of the box, as shown in Fig. 1, and then drawing the implement toward the operator the cutting-blade engages the sealing-strip a in a manner which will he at once apparent and severs the same with a shearing out. The use of the present implement insures a neat cutting of the sealing-paper and also avoids danger of tearing or cutting the corners of the box, as is frequently done when these boxes are opened by the use of penknives, &c.

I am aware that many minor changes in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of my device can be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without in the least departing from the nature and principle of my invention.

The modified construction illustrated in Fig. 5 is similar to that illustrated in the other figures and hereinbefore described in detail, except that a rotary cutting-disk 6 is substituted for the cutter-blade 6, said disk being in the slot of the head and being mounted upon a suitable pivot-pin 11.

Having thus described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is-

1. In an implement of the character indicated, a head with a channel portion, a vertically-risin g bifurcated cutter-guide integral therewith, a cutter adjustably held against lateral and longitudinal movement in said guide, and means bearing on said cutter for retaining the same in operative position; substantially as described.

2. In an implement of the character indicated, an operating-handle, bifurcated angular guide therein, a cutting-blade adjustably held in said bifurcation, and securing means bearing upon the sides of said blade adapted to holdthe same in position; substantially as described.

In an implement of the character indicated, a head with handle portion, guides and cutter-channel, all in one piece, a cutter adjustable in said channel, and means for holding the same therein in operative position; substantially as described.

4. In an implement of the character indicated, a head provided with guides which extend at an angle to each other, said head having a slot which opens into the space between said guides, a cutter adjustably mounted in said slot and projecting therefrom, and a se curing means bearing on said cutter; substantially as described.

5. In an implement of the character indicated, a Wall, a cutter-blade, one of said parts having a broken surface adapted to engage the other thereof, and means for forcing said blade against said surface; substantially as- .this 7th day of July, 1902.
