T0 all whom t may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE W. ECKERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Butler, in the county of Pendleton and State of Kentucky, have invented certain n ew and useful Improvements in Adjustable Screens, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in adjustable screens and has for its primary object, the
provision of a screen of this character which will be of simple construction and may be readily adjusted in either direction.
The invention has for another object, the provision of a screen of this character which may be formed of corner sections adjustably and slidably mounted upon one another.
The invention has for a further object, the provision of a screen of the above stated character which will be composed of the minimum number of parts and in which the outer frame members of the corner sections may be constructed for telescopical engagement with one another to form the outer sides and ends of the screen.
The invention has for a still further object, the provision of a screen of this character in which will be provided 4means for readily securing the wire mesh carrying frames to the main frame members of the corner sections.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of cooperating parts as hereinafter more specifically set forth, pointed out in the claimsfand shown in the drawings, in which Figure l'is an velevation of the complete window screen, Fig. 2 is a detail section substantially on the plane yof line 2 2 of Fig. l, Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view substantially on the plane of line '8 8 of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is aidetail section, substantially on the plane of line 4 4 ofFig. 1,Fig. 5 is a detail section, substantially on the plane of line 5 5 of Fig. l, Fig. 6 is a detail section,
substantially on the plane of line 6 6 of Fig. 1, Fig. 7 is an elevation of the removable wire mesh frame employed in Ythis invention, and-Fig. 8 is a detailsection on the plane of line 8 8 of Fig. 7. n
Referring more lparticularly to the drawings, in which similar'reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the severalviews, 1 -designates a wire ymesh carrying frame which is formed of suitable metallic strips composing the sides and ends of the frame `and having their opposite edges bent back, as shown at 2, to form gripping means for the edges 3 of the wire mesh body 4,Y the edges of the wire mesh body l4 being clampedV in the strips forming the frame 1, as clearly shown in Fig.; 8. The frame '1 is provided with suitable openings 5 in its up,- per and lower ends and in one side, to receive securing members as 'will be later clearly apparent. It will also be understood that the ends of the strips forming the frame 1 are suitably beveled and secured together, as shown at 6 to form the corners of the frame. The frame is also preferably of rectangular form and in constructing the complete screen, I desire to employ four wire mesh carrying frames l, one wire. meshjcarrying frame 1 being necessary for each corner of the screen.
Each corner of the screen is composed of an outer horizontal member7, an outer vertical member 8 and an inner horizontal member 9 parallel with theV member 7. For the purpose of making the interlocking adjustment of the sections of the screen clear,` I have marked the four sections A, B, C and D respectively. As shown in the drawings the section A forms the lower right hand corner ofthe complete screen andthe section B forms the'lower left hand corner while the sections C and D form respectively the upn per right and left hand corners of the complete screen.
The outer horizontal, member 7 of the corner section B has its bottom 10 flattened andv slidably'engaged in theportion 11 of the member 7 ofthe corner section A, it being understood that'the sections have their outer members 7 and 8 formed of hollow metallic sleeves bent as clearly shown vin, Figs. 2 to 4 inclusive. The sides of the member 7 of the section B are then brought together to formithe web portion 12 in l closed in the web 'portion 13 of the member 7 of the section A, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The sides of the web portions 12and 13 of the members 7 are 'then' bent outwardly at right angles and then again bent toward one another to form the flared portions 14 and 15 which coperate `with the portions 1Q and 11 to retain the sections A'and B in proper position in relation to one another. One edge 16 of the1 member 7 of the section B lis then extended" and 'provided with suitable` right angled'frameholding lugs 17upn`on'e face. The opposite edge 18 of the member 7 of the section A is also extended parallel with the edge 16 of the irst mentioned member 7 and also carries on one face the frameV struction and telescoping engagement of these parts of the sections C and D will be unnecessary. Y
The outer vertical members 8 of the sections A a-nd B are constructed in the same manner as the parts or members 7 and will therefore be numbered the same as the members 7. It may also be stated that the'outer vertical members 8 of thesections A and B are of the same size to receive the reduced outer vertical members 8 of the upper coi'- ner sections C and D, as will be readily understood by referring to Fig. 1 of the drawings. It will also be seen by referring to Fig. 1, that the diagonally opposite screen sections B and C are provided each with a large outer member and a small outer member, theouter member 8 of the section B being large-while the outer member 7 of the section C Vis large and the remaining outer members of said sections B and C being small for sliding engagement respectively in the members 7 and 8 of the section A. Therefore the members 7 and 8 of the section A are both large while both of the outer members 7 and 8 of the diagonally opposite y section D are small for vsliding engagement respectively in the outer members 7 Y and 8 of theV sections C andv B. By this arrangement and interlocking of the corner sections of the screen, the'latter may be readily adjusted in either vertical or horizontal directions to suit the window'frame or door frame in whichy it is to be positioned.
'By' referring to Figs. 3, 4 and 6, it will be Y seen that the extended edges 16 and 18 of the members 7 and 8 have their frame holding lugs 17 and 19 formed by bending outwardly and offsetting portions of said -edges and certain of these vlugs 17 and 19 are provided lwith suitable openings 20 for the threaded securing members 21 adapted to be engaged .through the same and through the openings 5 in one endV and one side of theV several wire mesh carrying framesV 1. Each securing member 21 is also adapted to be extended .through an upper washer 22 and threaded 'in av lower washer 23 engaged against'the face of the extendededge opposite. that against which the frames 11are secured. This shouldbe readilyunderstood by referring to Fig. 6 ofthe drawings- The remaining end of each wire 'mesh carrying frame 1 is similarly clamped against one face of the extended edge 24 of the member 9 of the screen section by which said frame 1 is carried by means of the clamping lugs 25 mounted upon said extended edge 24. By referring to Fig. 5 of the drawings, it will also be readily seen that the overlapping members 9 of the lower screen sections A and B are bent to form V-shaped. channels 26 which are engaged one'in the other for transverse or horizontal adjustment of the screen. It will also be understood that the inner horizontal members 9 of the upper corner sections C and D are similarly formed to assist in the transverse adjustment of the screen.` During longitudinal or vertical adjustment of the screen however only'movement of the outer vertical members 8 within one another will be'necessary.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the Y inner vertical Vedge of each wire Vmeshcarrying frame 1 is free and each frame may be readily moved to proper position Within the clamping members 19 or withdrawn 'l from the same when the corner'screen sec; tions are separated. It will also be seen that the corners of the screen are reinforced' by suitable corner bracing members 27 secured-in the outer corners lof the corner screen sections A,.B,'C and'D and'haying arms 28 extending over and secured to the extreme corners of the screen while the op;- positely directed'arms29'extend toward the center of thev screen and have the feet 3Q formed on their inwardly bent endsandse-Y cured in the curved channel bars 31 which extend over the corners of' the wire mesh' carrying frames land have their opposite ends connected with the members 7 and 8 of said corner screen sections, as will be readily seen by referring to thedrawings.` This forms a secure, bracing means for v4the corners of the adjustablescreen and gives the same a finished appearance.

3. An adjustable screen comprising vertical and horizontal adjustable hollow frame members, and overlapping wire mesh carrying frames mounted upon said frame members.
4. An adjustable screen comprising upper corner members mounted upon one another for transverse adjustment, lower corner members mounted? upon one another for transverse adjustment, the corresponding upper and lower corner members being mounted upon one another for vertical adjustment, and independent overlapping wire mesh carrying members mounted upon said corner members.
5. An adjustable screen comprising upper and lower corner members telescopically connected for vertical adjustment upon one another, the corresponding upper and lower corner members being telescopically connected for horizontal adjustment upon one another, and wire mesh carrying fra-mes mounted upon the separate corner members.
6. An adjustable screen comprising four corner members telescopically connected for horizontal and vertical adjustment of the screen, an independent wire mesh carrying frameV for each corner member, said wire mesh carrying frames being adapted for overlapping engagement, and means for securing said wire mesh carrying frames in position upon said corner members.
7. An adjustable screen comprising upper corner members mounted upon one another for transverse adjustment, connected lower corner members mounted for longitudinal adjustment upon said upper corner members, and overlapping wire mesh carrying screens mounted upon said corner members.
8. An adjustable screen comprising corner members having hollow horizontal and vertical outer frame members, the hollow outer frame members of said corner members being telescopically connected to permit transverse and longitudinal adjustment of the screen, interlocking inner horizontal frame members for said corner members, and means for bracing said corner members.
9. An adjustable screen comprising corner sections including outer horizontal and vertical hollow frame members and inner horizontal frame members, the outer horizontal and vertical hollow frame members being telescopically connected to provide for transverse and longitudinal adjustment of the screen, the inner horizontal frame members of the lower corner sections being interloclred, the inner horizontal frame members of the upper corner sections being interlocked, a wire mesh carrying frame for each corner section, means for securing each wire mesh carrying frame in position upon the proper corner section, and bracing means for the outer corners of said corner sections.
