UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL W. AYLWORTH, OF SOUTH HAVEN, MICHIGAN.
GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters IE-atent No. 664,612, dated December 25, 1900.
Application filed January 13, 1900. Serial No. 1,293. (No model.)
To a w/wm it may concern:
Be it known that I,-DANIEL W. AYLWORTH, a citizen of the 'United States, and a resident of South Haven, county of Van Buren, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Gates,of which I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in fence-gates; and the objects of the invention are to provide astrong serviceable gate which is thoroughly braced and can be set higher or lower at pleasure to accommodate aheavy fall of snow or the ingress or egress of small stock.
My invention consists in the detail construe tion hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the gate, and Fig. 2 is a rear view of' the end of the gate.
In the views, 1 is the gate, with a central straining-bar 2, end bars 3, and longitudinal bars 4. These framing-timbers are braced together by means of metal clamping-loops 5 at the several corners and diagonal brace-cords 6, made each of two wires twisted tightly together. The lower corners at each extremity are braced by means of the longer wires 7, which pass over the top of the central bracebar 2 and there rest'in the slot 8 andupon the bolt 9. By twisting these wires an absolutely rigid gate can be obtained, which will not sag in any direction. It can also easily be tightened if it becomes loose.
It will be seen that a special device is provided to permit of adjustment of the height of the gate from the ground, either temporary or permanent, so as to turn large stock and allow small stock to pass under or to enable the gate to be raised for a snow-drift and in similar situations. This device consists in the notched uprights 10 and 11 adjacent to the fence-post, to which the gate is hung in the usual manner by eyes 12 and which is not shown in the drawings. The notched uprights are connected by means of metal hoops 13, placed obliquely in the notches 16 and upon which the gate hangs. The inner up-v right l0 is integral with or, as shown, bolted to the end bar 3 of the gate; but a slotJ 14 re ceives the hoops and aords them free moi tion up and down over the notches 16. Pins 15, placed over the hoops in upright 11, prevent the gate from being lifted until they are removed, and buttons 17 prevent the hoops from slipping on the upright l1.
It will be readily seen that by removing the pins and turning the buttons to release the hoops the gate can be lifted as high as desired and lowered again without diiculty.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with the horizontal bars and end bars of a gate, of a central straining- 'bar higher than the end bars and slotted at its upper extremity, and means for bracing the bars together consisting of metal loops passed over the gate-corners and a metal loop passed over the crossing of the central bar and lower bar and twisted straining-wires connecting the loop at the crossing of the central bar and lower bar with the loops at each upper corner of the gate, and a continuous twisted straining-wire connecting the loopsi at each lower corner of the gate and passing through the slot in the upper end of the central bar, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed 'my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DANIEL W. AYLWORIH.
