BOLT.
0 all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, CHESTER GILES, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Moweaqua, in the county of Shelby and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in 'Bolts, of which the following is. a specification.
' The present invention relates to improvements in bolts and means for actuating and locking theflsame.
An object of the invention is toproduce a 1 locking means comprising a bolt which shall be of asimple construction, and which has 1 falling within the scope of the appended In the drawings: Figure 1 is a View illustrating the application of the improvement, the bolt being in its locking position, Fig. 2 is a similar view but showing the bolt in its unlocking position, Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view approximately on the line 3+3 of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is a similar sectional view approximately on the line 44: of Fig.
1, Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view approximately on the line 5+5 of Fig.2, Fig; 6 is a similar sectional view approximately on the line 66 of Fig. 2, Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view of the bolt, Fig. 8 is a similar View of the actuating lever, and Fig. 9 is a detail perspective view of the spring which engages with the roller end of the lever.
The improvement is, of course, applicable upon any structure including a swinging or movable element that is adapted to be latched or locked against a stationary element, and for illustrative purposes, I have shown in the accompanying drawings, the same attached to the cleat or batten which is secured to one of the members or sections of a hinged end gate for Wagons. My device is particularly applicableupon the structure illustrated, as the sections of end gates for wagons are subjected to strain or vibration incident to the shifting of the load thereagainst and the ordinary means for locking the end gate sections together upon the.

purpose. v s
Referring now tothe drawings in' detail the end gate sections are indicated' by the numerals 1 and 2 respectively, the said seeand therefore costly or ineilicient. for this tions being hingedly connected and the section has secured thereto a cleator batten 3 whlch extends over the sectionfl when the SGCtlOIlS are m'alinement, as' when closing the end of the wagon. The cleat 3,at the outer end thereof, is'centrally provided with a notch etwhich alines with the keeper 5 Let into the cleat 3 in a line withthe notches isa wear The bolt, in the present instance, has its outer end provided with an angular extens1on-8 that is adaptedto play in the notch and to enter the keeper 5 'whenfthe bolt is moved to locking position. The bolt, at the outer end thereof, is straddled by a guide bracket 9 that has its offset ends secured to the cleat 3 and the said bolt, at what I will term the inner end thereof, has one of its sides contacted by the ofi'set member of an L-shaped brackettlO which is also secured ,to the cleat; 3. 'The bracketlO is spaced from a similar bracket 11, the bracket 11 being disposed a distance away from one of the edges of the wear plate 6, and the said wear, plate has its edge adjacent to the bracket 11 provided with an elongated notch 13 that communicates with a longitudinal depression 14 in the cleat 3.
The numeral 15 designates a flat spring member that has one of-its ends secured to the cleat 3, the said spring bridging the depression 14. between the notch13 in the wear plate 6 and the bracket 11. The free end of the flat springis provided with an elongated slot 16 through which passes the shank of a headed member 17 which enters the cleat 3. Y
The bolt 7, at its end opposite its extension 8 is widened, the said widened portion being notched, as at 18,providing parallel walls or shoulders 19 and 20 and the outer walls provided by the enlargement and the said notch provides lugs 21 and 22 respectively.
The operating lever is indicated by the numeral 23.. This lever is secured through V within the depression 14 of the cleat.
upon the wear plate and also whereby the bolt in either of its longitudinal directions will be limited. The pintle 2-& also passes" through a suitable opening disposed adjacent the periphery of a rounded or cam member 25 integrally, formed upon one of the sides of the lever 23 and of a size to project beyond the opposite edges of the said lever, whereby one portion of the said cam member 25 will be normally received between the'notch 13 of the wear plate and The cam member 25 is adapted to be also re ceived in the notchv 18' of the bolt 7 and is disposed to contact with the shoulders 19 and'2O providing the end walls of the said notch and also with the walls of the lugs 21 and 22 which are arranged in a line with the shoulders 19 and 20. The lever has its inner end extended beyond its cam member 25, the said extension being preferably bifurcated to receive therebetween a roller 26, the said roller being pivotally secured to the lever, as at 27, and this roller bears against the flat spring 15, whereby the tension or pressure ofv the spring tends to hold the lever in either of its swung posit-ions, so that the accidental actuation of the bolt will be positively prevented.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that the operation of the device will be obvious.
The free end. of the lever 23 is preferably ofiset whereby the same may be readily grasped by the operator and in order to facilitate the swinging of the sections 1 and 2 to open the end gate, the cleat is preferably provided at the outer end thereof with a bail or handle member 28.
Having thusdescribed the invention, what I claim is:
1. The combination with a notched bolt and a keeper therefor and guide brackets forthe bolt and a pintle passing through one of the brackets and engaging with the outer face of the bolt, of a lever having an opening adjacent one of its ends receiving the pintle, a rounded surface upon the lever arrangedeccentrically of the pintle and disposed within the notch ofv the bolt to contact with the end walls provided by the notch, a spring arranged over a depression beneath the lever". and contacting with the inner end of the lever, as and for the purpose. set forth. I
2. The combination, a slidable bolt and a keeper therefor, said bolt having one of its sides notched, lugs upon the outer face of the bolt in a line with the end walls provided by the notch, guide members for the bolt including brackets disposed to the opposite sides of the bolt-at the inner end thereof, a pintle passing through the brackets and contacting with the bolt between the lugs thereof, a lever pivotally connected with the pintle between one of the brackets and the notched side of the bolt, an annular member formed upon one side of the lever and received in the notch of the bolt and receiving the pintle, a roller upon the inner end of the lover, a fiat spring member having one of its ends secured below the lever and contacting with the roller at the end of said lever.
Intestimony whereoflaflix my signature.
CHESTER GILES.
