sra'rns PAPEE-HANGERS TABLE-TOP.
To all whom it may concern:-
Be it known that LGEORGE J. FERGUSON,
a citizen of the United States, resident of Olypha-nt, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have madea certain new and useful Invention in Paper-Hangers Table-Tops; and I declare the following to be a full,- clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to-make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a table having the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, with the leaves of the table top separated from each other. Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of a leaf of the table top with the sections thereof folded. Fig. 4 is a side or edge view of the same. Fig. 5 is a detail plan View, partly broken away of the sections of a leaf of the table top separated from each other. Fig. 6 is a bottom detail plan view, partlv broken away, of a leaf of the table top, showing a modification. Fig. 7 is a side or edge view of the table top partly broken away. Fig. 8 is a longitudinal section of the table top showing a modification. Fig. 9 is a bottom plan view of the invention showing a modification. Fig. 10 is a detail perspective view, partly broken away, of a leaf of the table top showing a modification. Fig. 11 is a bottom plan view, partly broken away, of the invention, showing a modification. The invention has relation to folding tables, and particularly to folding table tops, designed mainly for use by paperhangers, and supported usually by separate trestles.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the numeral 2 designates the top, composed of two longitudinal halves or leaves, made up respectively of two transverse sections 3, 3 and 4, 4.
The sections 3, 3 have a tongue and recess joint 5, 5, the recess 5 of the section 3 being located between lateral projections 6, 6 of said section, and the section 3 having lateral notches 7, 7 located at the sides of the tongue 5 thereof and receiving the lateral projections.
The sections 4, 4 of the other longitudi- Specification of Letters Patent. I Pafignfied Deg Application filed February 17,1916. Serial No. 79,006.
nal half of the table top have a tongue and groove olnt 8, 8, the groove 8 of the sec tion 4 being located between lateral pro- 7 j'ections 9, 9 of said section, and the section 4 having lateral notches 10, 10, located at the sides of the tongue 4 thereof and receiving the lateral projections 9. The tongued sections 3 and 4 of the leaves are located diagonally opposite each other, as are also the recessed sections 3 and 4 of said leaves.
The sections 4, 4 are hinged at 11, midway of the tongues and recesses of the oint and below the same, and the section 4 is provided with dowel pins 12, 12, carried by the inner of the lateral projections 9, at opposite sides of the hinge l1, and engaging similarly located seats of the section 3. The tongues 6, 6 and 9, 9 will in this way rest upon the hinge and effectually prevent downward movement or buckling of the sections under strain, and the dowel pins will resist any buckling of the sections upon the hinge, either downwardly or upwardly.
Dowel pins 13, 13 are carried at the end portions of the sections 4, 4, and engage similarly located seats of the sections 3, 3. A modification of the invention is shown 1n Figs. 8, 9, 10 and 11 of the drawings, wherein a downwardly extending reinforc ing marginal strip 14 is used for the two halves or leaves, reinforcing hinge leaves 15 being carried by the face strips at the joint thereof, the main hinge leaves in this case being angular. Or brace strips 17, 17 may be employed at the joint, said brace strips carrying laterally extending pins 18, engaging guideways 19 of the sections 3 and 4, as shown in Fig. 11. A cross-rod 19 connects the brace strips together at the guideway ends thereof, the opposite ends of said strips being secured by screws 19 to the reinforcing marginal strips 14.
A turn button 20 of one of the sections, engaging a slot 21 of a leaf of the hinge and having a head adapted to be turned cross wise of said slot, may be employed to resist upward movement or buckling of the sections, as shown in Fig. 6.
The trestles, 22, are usually separate from the table top, although in some cases they are foldably connected to said top.
The invention provides a rigid table top, answering all requirements and capable of being taken apart and folded into compact form, so that it may be conveniently carried by hand and in railroad cars without interference with passengers upon the street or in the car, and without violating the railroad coinpanys rules. V
I claim:
1. A folding table top composed of sections meeting at the inner ends thereof, one of said sections having a central recess and lateral projections at the sides of said recess and another of said sections having a central tongue fitting in said recess and lateral notches engaged by said lateral projections, and a hinge for the sections having a pivot pin located midway of and supporting said tongue and said lateral extensions.
2. A folding table top composed of sections meeting at the inner ends thereof, one of said sections having a central recess and lateral projections at the sides of said recess, and another of said sections having a central tongue fitting in said recess and lateral notches engaged by said lateral projections, a hinge for the sections having a pivot pin located midway of and supporting said tongue and said lateral extensions, and
means for preventing upward movement of the sections. 1
3. A. folding table top, comprising longitudinal leaves each composed of sections having a tongue and recess joint, the tongued sections being located diagonally opposite and the recessed sectionsbeing similarly located and havinglateral projections at the sides of the recesses thereof, a hinge for the sections of each leaf located midwayof the length of and supporting the-tongue of the joint, and dowel pins at opposite sides of the hinge and connecting the inner of thelateral projections of one section with the similarly located lateral projection of thev diagonally opposite section.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
. GEORGE J. FERGUSON.
Witnesses JOHN L. KIKULEEN, Roy KENNEDY.
