/1 TORNE yf STAFF@ PATENT @FFFQEG DALLAS R. ALDERMAN AND WALDO E. TYLER, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
PORTABLE OPERATING-TABLE.
Application filed December 11, 1915.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that we, DALLAS R. ALBER- MAN, and Wanne E. TYLER, citizens of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Portable Operating- Tables, of which the following is a specification.
Uur invention relates to operating tables for physicians and surgeons, and one object is to provide a small'portable table of this character which may be folded into compact form so that it can be conveniently carried from place to place as occasion requires.
Afurther object is to provide a table of this character which can be readily attached to a bed, so that a patient reclining thereon may be brought into convenient position to be examined, medically, treated, or operated upon, as occasion demands.
@ther objects will hereinafter appear, and in order that the invention may be fully understood, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the table set up for use. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view of the `table with its legs folded. Fig. 3 is a perspective of the'table folded into r compact form. Fig. 4 is a cross section on line 11T-1V of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a cross section, enlarged, on line V-V of Fig.'2.
In carrying out the invention, we form the top of the table from a pair of leaves 1,
- having' similar segmental recesses 2 at one end and a pair of clamps 3 at their opposite end. The leaves 1, preferably, consist of enameled sheet metal reinforced with depending marginal flanges 4, and have their adjacent sides connected by hinges 5, so that they may be extended as disclosed by Figs. 1 and 2, or folded against each other, as disclosed by Fig. 3.
The clamps 3 are adapted to secure one end of the table upon the rail A of a bed, and each clamp consists of a stationary jaw 6 and a movable jaw 7, which latter has a longitudinal slot 8, so that it may be adjusted toward or away from the stationary jaw 6 when the set screws 9, extending through said slot are loosened. When tightened the set screws 9, which are threaded into bosses 91 at the underside Specification of Letters Patent.

serial No. 66,297.
ends 2 with stirrups 10, consisting of leather or other suitable material.
11 designates a pair of extensible legs secured to the underside of the leaves adjacent the stirrups 10 with hinges 12, so that they may be lowered to the position disclosed by Fig. 1, or folded against the underside of the leaves as disclosed by F igs. V 2 and 3. Each leg consists of two longitudinally slotted bars 13 and 14, connected by set screws 1 5 and 1G, the former of which is threaded' into the bars 13, while the latter has a head 16a engaging the rear side of the bar 13 and a nut 16b engaging the front side of the bar 14. y
To guard against the bars 14 slipping upon the bars 13 when the legs occupy the operative position disclosed by Figs. 1` I provide the abutting surfaces of said bars with serrations or corrugations 17. When the legs are shortened and folded against the underside of the leaves 1, as disclosed by Fig. 2, they are reliably held in folded position by resilient retaining devices 18, depending from the leaves 1 and adapted to pass through the slots in the legs.
19 designates a pair of arms for bracing the leaves 1 and holding them in open position. Each arm 19 has a slotted connection 2O at one end with a thumb screw 21, and has a hook shaped terminal at its opposite end 22 to engage the shank of a set screw 23, which like the set screw 21 enters an internally threaded boss 23a at the underside of a leaf 1.
24 designates a hook pivoted to the margin of one leaf, and adapted to engage a thumb screw 25 threaded into the margin of the opposing leaf to secure said leaves in folded position, as disclosed by Fig. 3.
In setting up the table for use the leaves 1 are secured in open position by the arms 19 and the set screws 21 and 23. The ends of the leaves containing the clamps 3 are then placed over a rail of the bed to which they are reliably secured by proper adjustment of the movable jaws 7 and the set screws 9. The legs 11 are then swung downward to a perpendicular position and adjusted longitudinally until their lower terminals rest upon the floor, when they are secured from further longitudinal adjustment by the set screws 15 and 16. The
4patient is then brought into proper relation to the top of the table and the feet are placed in the stirrups 1 0, SO that the physician or Cil surgeon, on pressing forward into the recesses 2, can get within convenient reach to make an examination or perform an operation, as required. After the table has been used the jaws 7 are disengaged from the bed rail and the table is lifted from said rail. The legs 11 are then shortened and folded against the undersides of the leaves, where they are secured by the resilient devices 18. The set screws 28 are next loosened and the arms 19 are swung beneath their respective leaves 1, so that the hook terminals Q2 may engage the set screws 23, Fig. 3, which are tightened upon said arms 19. The leaves 1 are then folded against each other and reliably7 secured by the hook 24 and the set screws 25.
From the foregoing description, it is apparent that we have produced a table embodying the features of advantage above enumerated, and while we have shown and described the preferred form of our invention, we reserve the right to make such changes in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as properly fall within the spirit and scope of the claims.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: l
1. In a table of the character described, a top having a recess at one end, clamps at the opposite end of said top to secure it to a bed, extensible legs foldably connected to the top adjacent its recessed end and each consisting of two slotted bars, means ad justably connecting said bars and extending through the slots thereof, and resilient means depending from the top to enter the slotted portions of the legs and hold the same in folded position.
2. In a table of the character described', two leaves foldably connected, a swingable arm having a. slotted connection with each leaf to swing beneath the opposing leaf to secure the leaves in open position, means beneath each leaf to secure the opposing arm in operative position and its respective arm in inoperative position, a stirrup at one end of each leaf, clamps at the opposite end of each leaf adapted to engage a bed rail, extensible legs foldably connected to the leaves, means depending from said leaves for holding` the legs in folded position, and means at the margins of the leaves for holding the same in folded position.
3. In a table of the character described, a top having a recess at one end and consisting of two leaves foldably connected, a swingable arm having a slotted connection with each leaf to swing beneathV the opposing leaf to secure the leaves in open position, thumb screws beneath the leaves to secure the opposing arms in operative position and their respective arms in inoperative position, a stirrup at one end of each leaf, extensible slotted legs foldably connected to the leaves, resilient devices depending from the leaves to enter the slotted portions of the legs and hold them in folded position, stationary jaws on the leaves adapted to engage one side of a bed rail, slotted movable jaws adapted to engage the opposite side of the bed rail, and thumb screws extending through said slotted movable jaws to secure the same in operative or inoperative positions, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures, in the presence of two witnesses.
