WILLIAM AMOS, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
APPARATUS FOR SETTING THE FRACTUBED BONES OF THE LEG.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. Oct. 19, 1909.
Application filed November 11, 1907. Serial No. 401,765.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM AMos, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Setting the Fractured Bones of the Leg, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in an improved apparatus for stretching the broken limb, whereby the ends of the fractured bone may be brought in proper osition and alinement, as hereinafter set orth.
Figure 1 represents a front view of the apparatus. Fig. 2 represents an edge view. Fig. 3 represents a top view of the pelvic pad. Fig. 4. represents an axial section of the apparatus. Flg. 5 represents an outer view of the foot strap in its opened condition. Fig. 6 represents the same when attached to the foot. Fig. 7 represents the apparatus as in use. Fig. 8 represents a separate View of the pelvic pad.
In the drawings, A represents a tubular holding member within the bore of which is loosely placed the tubular screw or extensible rod B, upon which is placed the milled nut C, the said extensible rod being prevented from turning within the bore of the member A, by means of the longitudinal slot D made in the side of the member A, and the guide pin E, which projects from the side of the rod B. The pelvic pad F is provided with the tubular shank G, which loosely enters the bore of the extensible rod B, and is held therein by means of the set screw H, which projects inwardly from the side of the said rod and enters the transversely directed slot I, made in the side of the shank G, of the pad, whereby the said pad will be adapted for a limited pivotal movement within the bore of the rod B. The pad F is provided with two separate cushions a, a, whereby suitable bearing will be provided for the pelvis and resulting injury will be prevented. The member A is provided at its opposite sides with the bars 6 b, which are integral with the member A, and form the required nuts for the operating screws J, J, which by their action upon the laterally extending arms 0, a, of the sliding brackets K, K, serve to draw the fractured bone of the leg outward, the arms at d of the said brackets K, K, sliding loosely in the guide ways 6, e, of the member A, and the outward movement of the said arms d, at,
being limited by means of the knobs j, j. The said screws J, J, are operated by means of the knurled collars f, f.
The arm 01 of the brackets K, K, is adapted to receive the stirrups g, g, of the foot' strap L, upon the lateral extensions 0, c, the said strap being provided with the ankle holes h, h, and with the fastening straps z, z'. The method of attaching the said straps to the laterally extending arms 0, c, of the sliding brackets K, K, and to the foot of the patient to be operated upon, is shown in Fig. 7.
While the bones of only one leg may be fractured it is important to operate conjointly upon both, in order to prevent distortion of the pelvis when the fractured leg is placed under the required tension, and by reason of the exposure of the ankle joints at the openings h, It, the proper degree of extension of the fractured leg may be correctly determined, the desired extension being readily effected by turning the operating screw J, which engages with the arm 0 to which the foot strap L is attached. The rod B is adjusted to the proper degree of extension by means of the milled nut G and is thus made adapted for use upon legs of different lengths.
I claim as my invention 1. In an apparatus for setting the fractured bones of the leg, the combination of the holding member provided with the guideways, the sliding brackets held in the guideways, the screws for causing the outward movement of the said brackets, the foot straps for the said brackets, the extension bar held within the bore of the holding member, the nut for adjusting the position of the extension bar relatively to the holding member, and the pelvic pad arranged at the end of the extension bar, substantially as described.
2. In an apparatus for setting the fractured bones of the leg, the combination of the holding member provided with the guideways, the sliding brackets held in the said guideways, means for attaching the foot to the said brackets, independent means for causing the extension of the brackets, the extensible rod held in the bore of the holding member, means for causing the extension of the said rod, and the pelvic pad arranged at the end of the rod, substantially as described.
3. In an apparatus for setting the fractured bones of the leg, the combination of the holding member provided with the guide- Ways, the sliding brackets held in the said I extension of the said rod, and the loosely guide-Ways, means for attaching the foot to held pelvic pad arranged at the end of the 10 the said brackets, independent screw means rod, substantially as described.
for causing the extension of the brackets,
the extensible rod held in the bore of the TILLIAM AMOS holding member, means for preventing the Witnesses: rotation of the said rod Within the bore of SOCRATES SGHOLFIELD,
the holding member, means for causing the SHEFFIELD SMITH.
