GARMENT-FORM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 12, ltlllfi.
Application filed November 8, 1915. Serial No. 60,318.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IsRAnL R. TAYLOR, acitizen of the United States, residing at Asbury Park, in the county of Monmouth and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Forms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to garment forms and has as its object to provide a form so constructed that it may be fitted to the person for whom garments are to be made and after adjustment and removal from the person may be employed in cutting and fitting the garment or garments thereby avoiding.
the necessity of tedious and tiresome fitting of the garments directly to the person and further permitting a person having garments made by a tailor living at a distance.
Another aim of the invention is to pro vide a garment form which will be light in weight and at the same time will possess the desired rigidity and which may be conveniently packed in a comparatively small space for shipment.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of the garment form embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4: is a side elevation similar to Fig. 2 but illustrating the sleeve portion of the form in vertical section.
The form shown in the drawings is designed primarily for use in the cutting and fitting of a coat although, of course, it may be employed in the cutting and fitting of vests. The form is made from any suitable material such, for example, as heavy paper,
cloth suitably sized or otherwise stiffened, or in fact, from any material relatively light in weight and yet possessing the desired rigidityl The form is preferably made in two sections or halves each including a breast portion 1, a back portion 2, and a shoulder portion 3, the said sections or halves being right and left so as to be adapted to be fitted to corresponding sides of the body. The breast portion 1 and back portion 2 of each section of the form may be of any suitable length although it will probably be sufficient if the lower portions of the sections when fitted to the body, terminate somewhat above the waist line. It will be understood, however, that if desired the sections may be made of suflicient length to extend to or even below the waist line and this would probably be necessary in cutting and fitting garments for women. Each section of the form is fitted with an arm opening indicated by the numeral 4 and with a sleeve or arm portion indicated in general by the numeral 5. The arm portion 5 of each section is integrally connected with the shoulder portion 8 of the section but only along the upper side of the arm opening 4 as indicated at 6 and preferably substantially between the points a'm in Figs. 2 and 4 of the drawings. The arm portion 5 of each section is otherwise disconnected from the section and consequently the upper edge of the arm portion at the arm pit, is free from connection with the section at the lower side of the arm opening 4. Each arm portion 5 is integral at the front, rear and outer side but the said portion is divided along a vertical line at its inner side from its lower end edge to the arm pit or upper edge and in so dividing this portion of the form overlapped edge portions 7 are provided and these edge portions may be caused to overlap a greater or less extent by compressing or contracting the said arm portion or allowing the same to expand as the portion is adjusted to fit the arm of the person for whom the garment is to be made.
The breast and back portions of each section of the form are integral at the front and rear but these portions are disconnected at the sides of the section and their edge portions overlapped as indicated at 8.
In using the form the two sections comprising the same are fitted to the opposite sides of the body with the vertical edges of L the breast and back portions of the two sections overlapping in the manner shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings and when the sections have been thus disposed the overlapped edges of the back portions of the sections are secured together by means of pins, basting thread or in any other suitable manner. The breast and back portions are then so adjusted as to snugly fit the body and their overlapped edge portions 8 are secured together for such adjustment. In a like manner the arm portions 5 are contracted to properly fit the arms and their overlapped edge portions are secured together. After the form has been adjusted in the manner above set forth it is removed from the person and may subsequently be set up and supported in any desired manner and the garments may be cut and fitted to the form in the same manner as would be done if the person were present. In order that the desired collar measurements may be taken, the breast, shoulder and back portions of each section have printed or otherwise marked .upon their outer faces a number of parallel or concentric lines 9 which are suitably spaced from each other.
It will be understood that by cutting and fitting garments by the use of the form herein described, possibility of error being made is avoided, particularly such errors as are liable to result from dependence being placed upon the measurements solely.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A garment form including sections adapted for disposal upon opposite sides of the body and arranged to have their front and rear edge portions overlapped, each section having an arm opening and being provided with an arm portion connected therewith at the upper side of the arm opening and disconnected therefrom at the lower side of the arm opening, each arm portion being divided along a vertical line from its lower end to its upper end at the inner side thereof whereby each of said portions may be expanded or contracted.
2. A garment form including sections adapted for disposal upon opposite sides of the body and each integral throughout, the said sections being arranged to have their front and rear edge portions overlapped, each section having an arm opening and being divided along a line extending vertically downwardly from the lower side of the arm opening, each section being further provided with an arm portion integral at the upper side of its upper end with said section at the upper side of the arm opening and each arm portion being divided along a vertical line at its inner side.
In testimony whereof, I afiiX my signature.
